Overview

Asset management is the means of ensuring that people, systems, processes and resources which deliver a construction project, are in place, in use and fit for purpose over the project's lifecycle. Application of asset management practice helps to ensure that a project not only delivers working assets when you hand the project over to operations, but delivers sustainable, longer term benefits and manages asset risks throughout their life. This specialist course will enable graduates to competently manage and co-ordinate physical assets to optimum effect using the most advanced available digital technologies with the University's commitment towards Vision 2028.

Combining theory with best practice, this course is designed for management professionals and engineers, seeking or already working in an operations environment.

The course will deliver specialised professional development, designed to meet the real-world needs of industry. It will educate its stakeholders in strategic asset management including the skills needed to pro-actively manage real estate, commercial and industrial assets, with a strong emphasis on performance metrics, risk management and sustainability.

With so much expansion taking place in the East London and South East region, the implementation of asset management practices within an organisation will bring tangible benefits such as lower operating costs, longer asset life, improved asset performance, greater reliability, higher safety standards, enhanced environmental support and better informed investment strategies.

This MSc (including the industrial placement option) draws on digital advances such as building information modelling, smart cities, big data and internet of things, to help close that gap through the management of assets to shape a better world.

There is currently a very high demand for graduates in various technical sectors because of a shortage of skilled staff. Up to 50% of engineering and management staff are due to retire in the next ten years (IAM).

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

MSc Asset Management with Digital Technologies is focused on developing the breadth of technical expertise required by a student to effectively manage physical assets using the most relevant digital resources. The course is intended for applicants who may have some employment experience in the area of asset management, and are seeking to progress, or redirect, their career in the industry by gaining a masters level qualification in management discipline that is directly relevant to their future career plans. Apart from the technical content, MSc courses are unique, as there is a strong emphasis on professional life and employability skills, embedded throughout all aspects of your advanced technical course focusing on enhanced key skills such as communication, digital proficiency, intelligence (like emotional and social) and teamwork. The programme will also offer an optional placement year to all students, enabling them to experience the real world and effectively connect their University experience with it.

    Mental Wealth: Professional Life 1

    Developing the key psychological and physical determinants of human performance are increasingly critical for successful graduate-level employment, entrepreneurship and career progression in the 4th industrial revolution.

    This module will provide you with the opportunity to develop skills, competencies and experience required for successful development to, and in, a range of potential future career areas.

    Herein you will begin to recognise the areas for your own personal professional development (including emotional, social, physical, cultural and cognitive intelligences) through taught and workshop activity.

    Central to the developmental process is for each student to cultivate the reflective skills, openness and self-awareness to enable themselves to assess what they are doing, identify areas for improvement, and confidently receive and give constructive feedback. Students will additionally develop knowledge of strategies to advance their own physical intelligence through 'life style' and 'self-care' approaches to inform their health and wellbeing.

    Having acquired understanding of the key developmental areas, you will have opportunity to pitch a small scale design project to a panel of practitioners, and be mentored and supervised by students from higher years. In this position you will learn and begin to apply the cognitive, cultural and social intelligences developed elsewhere in your studies (and from external activities) as required in the workplace, namely cognitive flexibility, emotional resilience, motivation, ethical decision-making, managing your audience, coordinating with others, negotiation, creativity, active listening, attention, problem solving, research, synthesis and analysis.

HOW YOU'LL LEARN

All modules include coursework, for which you will have opportunities to apply your knowledge to engineering projects based on real-life scenarios. The coursework will include analysis and design projects, research reports, group and seminar presentations and a research dissertation project.

You will also attend lectures, seminars and tutorials and you will work both individually and in groups. 

To support the hands-on nature of this course, we have an impressive range of facilities. Our modern, well-equipped laboratories are open to students all day and include dedicated labs. We also have superb computer facilities and the very latest design and key software.

Expert feedback and support are always on offer from our dedicated team of academics, all experts in their particular disciplines.

Our MSc courses are some of the most flexible around. Engineers employed in the industry have found that the part-time model can easily be tailored to suit their personal requirements.

About the industrial placement year
 
This course is also available as a two year master's with an industrial placement year. The industrial placement is designed to address the demands of the profession and give students a competitive edge when it comes to their career. The industrial placement component is for a duration of an academic year, i.e., normally 30 weeks including minimum 24 weeks of delivery time. It starts after students have successfully completed the first year of study, i.e., all the taught modules and the dissertation component of the MSc course which together form 180 credits. Please refer to the course specification for the summary of the course structure and further information.

Students on the MSc with Placement courses must pass all taught modules of their respective course plus dissertation to gain 180 credits, before they become eligible to progress to the next stage and undertake industrial placement. Students on the MSc course with placement will also normally be required to fulfil the 80% attendance requirement (on all modules) to be eligible to progress to the industrial placement. Students unable to meet the above requirements to progress successfully will normally be moved to the one-year full-time version of the course and their student visa, if any, will be curtailed accordingly.

It is ultimately the student's responsibility to secure their placement and the University cannot guarantee placements. The University will offer guidance and support and recommend students to many of our industrial partners that have expressed strong support and interest in the programme. 

During the industrial placement period, you will undertake an internship within a partner organisation (or by means of alternative arrangements such as projects led by industry and carried out on campus) and complete a zero-credit Industrial Placement Module. 

There are additional fees for the placement module (in the second year of the course), in addition to the fees for the taught modules and dissertation paid in the first year.

HOW YOU'LL BE ASSESSED

We assess you through a mixture of coursework, design drawings, oral examinations, your research dissertation and an end of term exam. You will be supported throughout your journey by timely feedback and support from your academic advisor and other support structure.

What we're researching

The course is very multidisciplinary, covering the subject areas of engineering, management and computing. The course will benefit from working with our flagship centre, the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI), which is UEL's centre of excellence for environmental research and development. We collaborate with industry, government, public agencies and charities to enable changes in physical infrastructure and social capital that benefits the environment, promotes sustainable living and creates a carbon neutral society.

Featured on Sky News, BBC News, The Times etc., UEL's engineering and computing staff have already received several government (e.g. Innovate UK) funded AI and cloud computing knowledge transfer projects in collaboration with industrial technology partners. The knowledge and experience gained from these research projects enhances the business relevance of UEL's teaching and further research with real world case studies and data.

Offering a multi-disciplinary theoretical, simulation and practical experience, this course is designed for engineers and management personnel working in an engineering operations environment, focusing on management and integrity of engineering and built environment assets.
