MA Leadership in Education
Teaching and Education
The course tackles issues directly related to the current field of national and international education. It challenges you to develop deeper critical thinking around how to meet the needs of policy and the needs of your students and staff.
You will work through the process of initiating and driving change at an individual, group and/or organisational level.
You will also learn how to adapt your communication strategies and techniques for developing new behaviours and attitudes. In short, the course aims to equip you with the skills to lead the development of others.
You may have already completed National College Leadership courses, which you can use to gain credits towards the MA Leadership in Education. This course is designed to either build on these programmes or stand alone.
Designed for leadership
The course is designed specifically for people already in leadership positions and those who are working towards this goal.
The focus on change management directly relates to the current field of education.

Some modules have been designed using online materials and innovative mobile applications, providing flexible ways to manage your learning.
What we're researching
John Macklin, leader of the MA Leadership in Education, carries out research into leadership in schools in relation to complexity theory.
Elsewhere in the department, Warren Kidd, PGCert Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Course Leader, researches in the area of teacher identity and has published extensively in the area of sociology and teaching and learning.
Dr Wayne Tennent, who teaches on the MA Education course, is an expert in reading comprehension, having written two books on the subject and led numerous projects in schools which have demonstrated impact on pupil achievement in this area. He works extensively with the United Kingdom Literacy Association.
The research of Nicole Whitelaw and Julie Gariazzo, both of whom teach on the MA Special Educational Needs course, is in the area of autism.
Our Professional Doctorate (EdD) course draws on the input of researchers from across the Cass school of Education and Communities. It is led by Dr Gerry Czerniawski, who has published extensively in the areas of teaching and learning, teacher and teacher educator identity, continuing professional development (CPD) and pupil voice.
A founder member of the International Forum for Teacher Educator Development (InFoTED), he serves on the British Educational Research Association (BERA) Council and is chair of BERA's British Curriculum Forum. Gerry is a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Making a difference
UEL is one of the UK’s leading modern research universities. Postgraduate Loans (PGL)
The Postgraduate Loan (PGL) provide non means-tested loans of up to £10,280 to taught and research masters students. It will be paid to students as a contribution towards tuition fees, living costs and other course costs.

As part of the Tier 4 student visa requirements, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) estimate that you will need £1265* per month to cover your living costs. It includes expenses for accommodation, food and drink, travel within London, text books, entertainment, clothing, toiletries and laundry. Most Tier 4 students are required to show they have sufficient funds to cover the first nine months of the course before they start- a total of £11385- in addition to the tuition fees. International students are required to pay a deposit prior to being issued a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
Your remaining balance will be paid in five monthly instalments over your first term. The first of these instalments must be paid when completing your enrolment on arrival at UEL. Please follow the payment instructions here.
After the required payment has been made, you will be asked to complete the online International Student Reply Form to confirm your acceptance of our offer and of our terms of admittance and fees policy.

What you'll study
The teaching year is divided into three terms of roughly equal length. A typical student registered in a part-time attendance mode will study one module per term. The dissertation module takes two terms to complete.

How you'll be assessed
Due to the practical nature of the course, there are no examinations. We assess you on your coursework for the PG Cert and PG Diploma modules and on your dissertation for the award of MA. Each module assessment will typically be a single submission portfolio of 5,000 words or equivalent. The dissertation is 14,000 words.
How you'll learn
The course integrates theory and practice so you can personalise your learning and address areas of interest and challenge in your own work.
It focuses on collaborative learning so, as you address current issues and problems, you are supported by the strength of collective knowledge, experience and expertise.
The course includes face-to-face seminars as well as collaborative activities and discussions in a virtual learning environment.
We teach face-to-face modules in the evening, to fit around your work patterns. Two of the modules are delivered through distance learning. Learning on these modules will be supported by a mobile application, which will guide you through the readings and assessment tasks.
Course Leader John Macklin has been a peer mentor to local authority leaders and deputy leader of a London borough.
He says, “There’s a distinction between leadership, leading and management. A leadership position is a strategic role rather than the operational role that a manager carries out. Good leaders will probably use a combination of leadership and management skills.
What you'll learn
Focused on helping you to develop your personal theories, vision and values in relation to leadership, all modules are designed to link theory and practice. This enables you to evaluate and apply your knowledge of leadership and to develop research-informed practice.
As well as considering different types of change, the core module, Leading Change, looks at the psychology of change and the way people respond emotionally to feedback on their performance.
This forms a key part of managing change effectively. You will also gain a clearer understanding of how change impacts on individuals and teams within an organisation.
Other modules focus on developing leadership capability for change, and on national and international contexts.
The final module is a dissertation, where you carry out a research project focused on an area relevant to you and your work.
Your future career
This MA degree demonstrates that you are able to think and function at master’s degree level, which means you are more likely to be selected and recruited for promotion.
You will develop research skills on this course that are also highly sought after in the current climate. You will be aware of future challenges to your context and how to align the organisation to meet these challenges
While this is a newly validated course, Course Leader John Macklin has taught leadership modules on other UEL courses. Participants in these modules have been promoted to leadership roles, thanks to the understanding and learning they have gained.
They were better able to pitch their presentations and interview answers to the specific challenges faced by the recruiter, and they were able to bring an academic focus to them.
Your future role may be as a member of a school’s senior leadership team, but the knowledge and skills that you will develop will be just as applicable to organisations outside of education.
