Ademola Soile-Balogun
Ademola Soile-Balogun is a research candidate at the Centre of Fintech, RDSBL of the University of East London.
As a member of the Centre, Ademola's research is centred around the regulation of decentralised finance (DeFi) and virtual currencies as an appropriate funding mechanism in addressing the shortfall of affordable mass housing in Nigeria. This research is premised on a background of a major housing deficit, incorporating the need for decent, sustainable, and available housing in line with Goal 11.1 of the UNSDG 2030.
The research considers in equal measure, the local constraint in regulating DeFis as a model for funding, whilst adopting international regulatory comparison as a framework for arriving at a recommendation for Nigeria.
She is currently about to begin the third year of her research endeavour.
She was also part of a visiting UK Policy research team to Nigeria, advising on the adoption of Blockchain in the Nigerian Public Sector. In June 2024, the research team submitted a 7-recommendation policy document to the Federal Government of Nigeria which included a home-grown Blockchain Technology (Nigerium).
The 7 recommendations are currently being considered for adoption by the Nigerian National Steering Committee on Blockchain.
Her professional research centres on the legal and regulatory frameworks surrounding Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and Decentralised Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), with a focus on Tanzania and broader African financial systems.
The research investigates how DeFi, which allows financial transactions without traditional intermediaries, and DAOs, which operate as decentralised governance structures, present unique legal challenges and opportunities. Particularly in the African context, these technologies could provide a path toward greater financial inclusion for underserved populations.
An aspect of the study is comparing international regulatory frameworks, such as the European MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation). The objective is to develop a legal framework for Tanzania that balances innovation in decentralized technologies with the need for accountability, consumer protection and market stability. This involves addressing issues such as the legal personality of DAOs, governance challenges, and ensuring proper oversight in decentralised platforms

George is clear that an economy that is open to all and empowers those who are marginalised, not only financially but also socially and politically, will be more robust and resilient.
