London ready
Preparing for your arrival
Navigating London as a student can be tricky. Here are a few resources to make things easier to manage.
Finding a place to live
If you are moving to London for your studies, Welcome!
We have resources to help you find a place to live whether on campus or off campus.
The closer you live to campus, the easier it will be to get to class and to participate in the many co- and extra-curricular activities that are available throughout the year.
We are one of the very few universities in London to offer on-campus accommodation. Our stunning waterfront Halls of Residence are convenient, secure, comfortable and a great way to live, learn and connect.
Travelling to and around the city
Landing in London
There are six major airports in London: London City, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, London Luton, London Stansted and London Southend.
London City Airport is the closest to UEL’s Docklands Campus. Gatwick and Heathrow are the two of the most commonly used airports for new international student arrivals.
Public transport
Transport for London (TfL) is the operator for London transport systems (taxis, trains, trams, buses, etc.).
Students are eligible for discounted travel throughout London, by using a Student Oyster Card.
Are you an international student?
Check out our International Student Arrival Guide.
Register with a GP
In the UK, your family doctor is known as a general practitioner, or GP. All students have free access to healthcare through the NHS.
It’s important that you register with a GP near you, as soon as possible.
Explore the city
Don’t forget to explore the city and have some fun. Find out which neighbourhoods you like most. Visit iconic landmarks. Watch a show on the West End. There’s so much to do here.
