What is Clearing?

Clearing is an opportunity to secure a place at university. It runs every year from July to September. If students apply late, change their mind or miss out on the requirements of a conditional offer, it’s a way to get on to a course and start their academic journey. Students who come to UEL through Clearing have go on to achieve first-class grades and inspirational careers.

We have produced a step-by-step guide to help you and your child through Clearing. You can view and download our guide to Clearing to find out more about Clearing at UEL.

How to approach Clearing

If your son or daughter predicts they won’t get the grades they need, it’s a good idea to research alternate universities beforehand. Have a look at courses with slightly lower entry requirements and shortlist a few courses and universities they are interested in. This preparation can take some stress off your child if they don’t get the results they were hoping for.
Your son or daughter should make sure they’re available to make calls once they get their results. Try to encourage them to not to be on holiday abroad or somewhere remote without phone signal.
It may seem obvious, but make sure you have a phone, pen and paper ready. Your son or daughter may well be feeling panicked so it’s worth making sure you have all the essentials to hand.
There are plenty of resources out there to give advice on alternative courses and universities. Your son or daughter can seek help from their school or college, or from a university they are interested in.

If your child is worried and stressed about their situation, make sure they pick up the phone and talk it through with someone who can help. Most universities have a dedicated Clearing hotline – so make the most of it!

You can speak to one of our knowledgeable advisers by calling our Clearing hotline on +44 (0)20 8223 3333.
It’s important that students in Clearing are willing to adjust and be flexible. Universities will let students know about similar courses they may be interested in. It’s worth going into Clearing with an open mind. Your son or daughter may not think it at first but clearing could mark the beginning of something great. A change of course or subject may turn out to be the best decision for their career.
Going through Clearing can be stressful so encourage your son or daughter to stay calm and motivated. Try to help them stay as relaxed as possible – feeling panicked and rushed will only hinder their chances of finding a course and university they are truly happy with. And if clearing doesn’t work out – there’s always next year.

How to apply to UEL through Clearing

Step 1: Choose a course
Your son or daughter should have a look at the courses they’re interested in. You can find our list of courses with places on our course search or the full Clearing vacancy listings for all universities on the UCAS website.

Step 2: Get in touch
Students should give us a call on +44 (0)20 8223 3333 and one of our helpful advisors will talk them through the process. Make sure your child call us as soon as possible as places are competitive in Clearing. If they can’t get through straight away, they should keep trying. We will answer calls as soon as we can.

Step 3: UCAS
Students will find a UCAS Clearing number located on the welcome and choices pages in UCAS Track. As soon as they have this number (and we’ve given them a verbal offer over the phone), your child can officially enter their Clearing choice in Track. If they aren’t registered with UCAS, give us a call on +44 (0)20 8223 3333 and an adviser will talk them through the steps.

Step 4: Confirmation
Your child doesn’t need to reply to a Clearing offer. Once they add the choice, we will confirm their place in Track.
