Exceptional Hardship Bursary FAQs

The Exceptional Hardship Bursary is a fund the University of East London has allocated to help students with financial difficulty during the current covid-19 global pandemic. The fund is open to help students experiencing financial difficulties as a direct result of Covid-19. Issues such as increased expenditure due to dependent children being at home (due to school closures), will not be addressed under this Exceptional Fund. In such cases, students will be advised to apply for the existing SMART Hardship Bursary or can speak to a SMART Advisor for further advice.

You are eligible to apply if you are studying at University of East London and are one of the following:

  • An Undergraduate student
  • A Postgraduate student
  • A Distance-Learner student
  • A Home student
  • An EU student
  • An International student
Each assessment will be awarded based on individual needs. The University’s Student Money Advice and Rights Team (SMART) will assess each application individually and award funds based on the evidence submitted and the student’s circumstance.
Applications will be assessed by the University’s SMART team. Applications will be cross-checked using the evidence submitted and, if successful, students will be awarded a bursary fairly and honestly. SMART anticipate this taking up to 10 working days from when you submit your application.

We've made it simple and straightforward for you to apply. To apply, please take the following steps:

1. Please fill in the application form, which can be found on our intranet page, and email bursaries@uel.ac.uk with your attached application form and supporting evidence:
