The MRes Social Justice suite of courses provide high level research training in the chosen disciplinary specialism combined with an intensive course of learning in research advocacy. The courses are designed to support students pursuing research careers to showcase and advocate for their research skills and for the value of research to a range of organisations and community settings. Students will gain skills in media use, advocating for research in diverse settings, co-producing research projects with organisations and communities and communicating research outcomes to diverse audiences.
The course is led by the Institute for Connected Communities (ICC), with pathways in partnership with Arts and Creative Industries (ACI), Health, Sport and Bioscience (HSB) and Royal Docks School of Business and Law (RDSBL). The core modules is delivered by ICC staff with discipline-specific core modules taken in partner schools. The suite of courses includes modules from existing level 7 courses in ACI and HSB. New modules will be delivered by ICC and processed by the relevant school.
These MRes courses are targeting the ‘Global Majority’ particularly students from groups who are underrepresented in research careers with a first degree wanting to pursue a postgraduate qualification in the Creative Arts, Business Management, Bioscience or Social Sciences to help create social justice in a turbulent world.
The Global Majority includes people whose recent families originated from the global south (Africa, South Asia, and South America) and other non-white backgrounds.
The MRes in Social Justice is part of the Social Transformation and Advocacy through Research project (STAR), which aims to increase the participation of global majority individuals in postgraduate research.
The suite of courses integrates career and sectoral guidance through the core module ‘Research Advocacy’.
The MRes Social Justice suite has two entry points - September and January. The course is available full-time, to be completed in 12 months, or part-time to be completed over 24 months.
The MRes Social Justice suite of courses require students to undertake one module per term in terms one, two and three if studying the one-year programme full-time.
Part-time students can complete the course over two years, undertaking one module in term one and one module in term two in year one and completing the module three research project in year two.
Entry requirements
- A university 2:1 degree or equivalent qualification.
