The University of East London is based in two superbly located campuses – in Stratford, close to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and in London Docklands, near Royal Albert Dock.
We operate a regular, free double-decker bus service between our Stratford and Docklands campuses. This runs morning to evening, and takes about 25 minutes.
Stratford Campus (Water Lane)
Our historic Stratford campus is located in one of the best-connected areas of London: close to Stratford’s thriving town centre, the 2012 Olympic Park, and just 15 minutes from London’s West End.
Stratford’s facilities include a new library and learning centre, upgraded laboratories and computing services. The student support hub and the Centre for Clinical Education in Podiatry, Physiotherapy and Sports Science are housed in new buildings. There is also a campus restaurant and bookshop, and a Students’ Union café-bar.
Not forgetting, Westfield Stratford City - Europe’s largest indoor shopping mall - is just one of Stratford’s attractions, alongside many other shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. There are two multiscreen cinemas, a theatre, an arts centre and much more. So there's always plenty to do here.
Our waterfront Docklands campus provides a state of the art learning environment with modern lecture theatres and seminar rooms, a 24/7 library and a multimedia production centre - complete with audio-visual labs and studios. UEL is one of the few London universities to provide on-campus accommodation. Our Docklands Student Village houses over 1,200 students, as well as shops, a bar and a launderette.
Students love our £21m Sports Dock - a world-class sports and teaching facility that was home to Team USA during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It really is a fantastic facility equipped with two huge, multi-purpose indoor sports arenas and a fully equipped strength and conditioning room. It's no surprise that top athletes take advantage of our amazing facilities and come to study with us.
Stratford Campus (University Square Stratford)
Part of our Stratford campus, University Square is a unique partnership with Birkbeck, University of London. The joint vision of our two distinguished and complementary institutions is to create a major new university campus to meet the growing aspirations of local people at a time of great change and opportunity in east London.
Modern facilities include performance spaces and studios; the Harvard lecture theatre with live capture technology; the multi-media Weston Learning Centre; a dedicated MBA suite and teaching space; a 300-seat specialised tiered lecture theatre; and a simulated courtroom for mooting experience.
Our roots go back to 1892 when the West Ham Technical Institute was created as a provider of vocational education for the local community. Dubbed the ‘People’s University’ by John Passmore Edwards, the Institute offered courses in science, engineering and art and also featured a Women's Department. In 1970 the Institute merged with colleges in Walthamstow and Dagenham to form the North East London Polytechnic. Following the modernisation of facilities and campuses, we became the Polytechnic of East London in 1988 and, in 1992, the University of East London. The Docklands campus – the first new university campus to be built in London for 50 years – was opened in 1999. In April 2013 we were granted armorial bearings by the College of Arms.
Our ambition is to become London’s leading university for civic engagement, offering people opportunities for education and employment that they need to succeed in their future careers. We put inclusivity alongside inspiration, with a longstanding commitment to our community as an ‘anchor institution’ that makes a difference to people's lives.
