Mr Richard Latham

Principal Lecturer

Richard is a Land Surveyor by profession and he is programme leader for the BSc (Hons) Surveying & Mapping Sciences programme. Richard teaches on the Surveying and on the Civil Engineering programmes. He is also the School Leader for Quality assurance matters. Richard has taught land surveying at UEL for over 25 years. Richard holds a BSc(Hons) Surveying Mapping Sciences (CNAA) and studied at North East London Polytechnic.

    I am programme leader for our BSc(Hons) Surveying and Mapping Sciences programme.

    UEL is one of only two providers of Land Surveying (Geo-Spatial Engineering) undergraduate degree programmes in the UK. We are unique in the southern part of the UK in offering this programme. Since 1994 I have been programme leader of this programme and in this period I have also led programmes we have offered in Geographic Information Sciences and in Civil Engineering Surveying (we no longer offer these two programmes).

    Since April 2016 I have been the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering Quality Leader. This role takes overall responsibility for the management and implementation of our University Quality Assurance procedures at School level. I have been involved in our University quality assurance process since 2003 and during this period I have been a member  of the School Quality Sub-Committee and I have chaired, and been a panel member of, a variety of validation and review panels.

    2003 – 2004 Advisor to Terravista Ltd – Development of GPS 3D Tracking Devices

    2001 Tashkent, Uzbekistan - Training Consultant to EU TACIS Project - Land Registration in Uzbekistan Phase II for BLOMINFO A/S (Sweden)

    2000 Zhongshan University, Guangzhou, China Special Lectures & provision of training in GIS customisation using Avenue and AML. Institutional Strengthening Project funded by DFID (UK Government).

    1997 - 1998 OLLO Project advisory board.

    1996 - 1998 Project Facilitator (OLLO Project) 4 one month secondments in Hungary for the Open Learning for Land Offices in Hungary (OLLO) Project (EU TEMPUS funded project)

    1994 Szekesfehervar Hungary - Feasibility study into the improvement of teaching land information management for professional staff.

    1992 Introductory information technology teaching for Lands and Survey Department, Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies.

    1990 Survey party leader, glacier surveys Italian Alps & Apennines.
