    Dr Ali Abbas is a Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering and Programme Leader for MSc/PGDip Programmes in Civil and Structural Engineering. He has a broad interest in structural analysis and design and has led successful research projects in this field. 

    He joined UEL in September 2010 and prior to that was a Lecturer at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London since 2005. He completed his PhD research project at Imperial College London in 2002 and spent over three years in industry working on a variety of engineering projects with Atkins Consultants.

    He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is also the school’s Student Liaison Officer with the Institution of Structural Engineers. 



    Overview

    Dr Abbas has a wide practical experience in the analysis and design of structures, encompassing numerical modelling and experimental work. He has over 20 publications in leading journals and international conference proceedings. The overriding aim is improving current design guidelines. A major current interest is the non-linear finite-element modelling of concrete structures. He also has a special interest in fibre-reinforced concrete structures under monotonic, seismic and impact conditions and is currently investigating its application to pile-supported and suspended slabs as well as studying recycled light-weight aggregate concrete. A further interest is on earthquake engineering. He has also carried out seminal research work on concrete industrial ground-floor slabs.

    Ali has a broad interest in structural analysis and design, encompassing numerical modelling and experimental work. A major current interest is the modelling by finite elements of the linear and nonlinear behaviour of concrete ground-floor slabs. A parallel development is that of simplified design methods aimed at improving shortcomings in current design guidelines. He also has a special interest in fibre-reinforced concrete structures and is currently investigating its application to pile-supported slabs as well as under seismic and impact conditions. A further interest is on earthquake engineering.

    Publications

    Dr Abbas is a civil and structural engineer with a strong educational background and practical experience in both academia and industry. Currently a Senior Lecturer at the area of Civil Engineering, University of East London, teaching and conducting research since 2010. Formerly a Lecturer at Imperial College London 2005-10. Prior to that spent three years with Atkins Consultants, working on various design projects. Earned a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering), from Imperial College
    London in 2002.  

    Dr Abbas has been active in publication in highly-regarded journals such as the Proceedings of the ICE (Structures & Buildings), Engineering Structures, Computers & Structures and Magazine of Concrete Research. He has published in proceedings of international peer-reviewed conferences (e.g. Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics COMPDYN). He has also published a book chapter.
