My journey as a psychology student
My journey as a psychology student
Tania started her journey on the BSc Psychology with Foundation Year. After successfully passing the foundation year she transferred to the BSc Clinical and Community Psychology. She’s now about to start the final year of her degree.
Why did you choose to study psychology here at UEL?
“I had read that the psychology research department was one of the best in the UK, and their research was internationally recognised; that was one of the reasons I chose to study psychology at UEL. I also knew that UEL was diverse, which influenced my decision to join the university. I wanted to go somewhere that I would be comfortable and accepted, and I’m so pleased I did."
I have received so much support and encouragement at UEL, more than anywhere else in my educational journey. I always was made to feel like I couldn’t, and now I know I can”
What did you enjoy most about your journey with us so far?
“I discovered while at UEL that I have dyslexia and possibly ADHD. I found studying and education incredibly difficult; I was reasonably average during my secondary and college education. I was sometimes failing my exams. I failed psychology at A-Level; it upset me because I knew I wanted to pursue it as a career. I thought maybe education wasn’t for me after all, so I took a break from studying, but I couldn’t find my passion in anything else, so I tried again and applied for UEL. I got accepted for psychology with a foundation year.
I am starting my third year and could be on my way to getting a 1st with the help of the lecturers’ (who are incredibly helpful and friendly) and the academic support staff who help with assignments. I have received so much support and encouragement at UEL, more than anywhere else in my educational journey. I was always made to feel like I couldn’t, and now I know I can.”
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about studying psychology at university?
"It is one of the broadest subjects. There is such a huge range of career options available for psychology students. You don’t have to be a psychologist, you can go on to work in an office, in customer service, or even as a teacher. I have spoken to so many people about my own career progression, and I’ve only seen more and more opportunities opening up to me. So many jobs require the skills and qualities gained from a psychology degree.
And it’s a fascinating subject to study, I have learnt so much about myself and the world around me. If you are interested, please attend an open day and speak to lecturers and current students. I have had many opportunities and met many people, and I am so glad I chose UEL. I have really enjoyed my journey so far.”
