Bakari is a lawyer by training with over a decade experience in legal practice. He holds LLB & Shariah (Double Honours), BL, LLM (International Law & World Economy) and a PhD in law.
Bakari is a lecturer in law, and the module leader for company law. He teaches company law, law of contracts and land law among others. In addition, Bakari is the UNICAF Link Tutor for LLM programmes.

OVERVIEW
Bakari obtained his undergraduate law degree from a Nigerian university, and became a barrister and solicitor of the supreme court of Nigeria in 2007. He also holds an LLM and a PhD from the university of East London. Prior to joining UEL, Bakari worked for about a decade in Nigeria as a senior state counsel in the ministry of justice. In this capacity, he represented the state in many cases before the magistrate and high courts, and participated in the draft of various important legislations and policy documents.
In 2019, Bakari was nominated to participate in the Commonwealth Forum on Good Governance, ICT and Innovation where he worked with the Commonwealth Secretariat in London to review the draft policy document for CHOGM 2020 held in Kigali, Rwanda.
Currently, Bakari works with UEL's Royal Docks School of Business and Law as a lecturer in law where he leads and teaches company law and law of contracts but also teaches land law among other modules. In addition to all this, Bakari is the academic link tutor for LLM programme where he coordinates UEL's partnership with UNICAF in Cyprus.
CURRENT RESEARCH
Bakari has successfully completed a PhD thesis titled 'Infrastructure and development in the Nigeria's Mining Sector through Legal reform and Innovative Financing Strategy (Sukuk)'. This thesis has been published by the British Library and is available online.
The research focused on issues of investment practice in Nigeria’s mining sector, with an emphasis on the need for better regulatory policy framework to help stimulate economic growth and sustainable development.
The impact of this research is not limited to providing policy makers with insightful ideas to formulate policies that stimulates investment and growth but also looked at resource community participation challenges and recommended multi-stakeholder affordable solutions.
In addition to above, Bakari is working on the following papers (to be published):
- The role of Ijtihad in the contemporary world
- Upholding legality against the actions of Boko Haram in Nigeria
- A critical review of the Nigeria's Petroleum Industry Act (PIB)
External Roles
Besides his academic job, Bakari doubles as a legal adviser (freelancer) to organisations such as British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) where he renders expert's opinion in relation to matters to do with Nigeria's law. His most recent engagement with the BBC was in February 2023 regarding a controversial digital documentary produced by the corporation on a matter pending before a court in Nigeria.
