International Day for Disaster Reduction: Building Youth Leadership

Young people and disaster reduction: what can they do?

In celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction (DDR), the University of East London will host a special conference with a line-up of expert speakers on 13 October 9am-1pm at the Knowledge Dock, Docklands campus, University of East London.

The event will be delivered in partnership with the World Association for Sustainable Development (WASD),the Arab Urban Development Institute and the UN Major Group for Children and Youth Young Scientists Platform on DRR.

This one day event will look at the burdens faced by young people in regards to natural and man-made disasters, stressing that these burdens pose huge challenges for youth and more importantly, undermine development efforts in all sectors of social, economic, cultural and environmental sustainability.

Young people can play a valuable role as innovators, scientists, inter-cultural ambassadors, peer-to-peer trainers, community mobilisers, and advocates for vulnerable people, empowered to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, reduce mortality rates, and improve resilience in the lead up to World Conference for DRR and beyond.
