We will develop your thinking skills through historical theory and conceptual thinking, research processes and investigation and the development of your ideas through outcomes.

    Guided independent study

When not attending timetabled lectures or workshops, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will typically involve skills development through online study, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects and preparing coursework assignments and presentations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, specialist facilities, such as game labs, the library, the full Microsoft Office software, including MS Teams, and Moodle: our Virtual Learning Environment.

    Academic support

Our academic support team provides help in a range of areas – including learning and disability support.

The fashion subject area is made up of industry-knowledgeable staff, entrepreneurs and business owners, so you can be sure you will be learning in real time. We believe it is important that your education is consistent with the times and reflects the industry you will progress into.

    Dedicated personal tutor

When you arrive, we'll introduce you to your personal tutor. This is the member of the academic course team who will provide academic guidance, be support throughout your time at UEL and who will show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer.

    Workload

Each year you will spend around 300 hours of timetabled learning and teaching activities. (i.e. approx. 150 hours per term, 12.5 hours per week 4.1 hours per module).  These may be lectures, workshops, seminars and individual and group tutorials. Contact hours may vary depending on each module.

    Your timetable

Your individualised timetable is normally available within 48 hours of enrolment.  Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9am and 6pm.  For undergraduate students, Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities, but there may be occasions when this is not possible. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected.

    Class sizes

The size of classes can vary depending on the nature of the course, module and activity. This can range from large groups in a lecture theatre setting, to smaller groups taking part in seminars and collaborative work.

How you'll be assessed

You will be assessed with a mixture of coursework, essays and presentations. Coursework includes essays, research files, visual and moving image portfolio, group and seminar presentations and a final-year project. In your third year, your assessment will be based on research coursework, written reports and a final portfolio outcome. You will have the opportunity to gain feedback from your lecturers, peers and our industry partners. You will always receive written or audio feedback, outlining your strengths and how you can improve. We aim to provide feedback on assessments within 15 working days.

What our students and staff say

Sharon N Hughes
I have worked in universities in several countries and I truly can’t say enough positive things about the diversity of the students, academics and staff I encounter daily at UEL."

Sharon N Hughes

Senior Lecturer of Fashion Marketing and Fashion Culture and Business

Fashion
I enjoyed my time at UEL. I learned so much about the world of fashion from theories to practice during my industry experience. Our tutors were knowledgeable and approachable and had many connections which benefited our studies further. I had the opportunity to have my PR placement at Alexander McQueen and another one in New York. The tutors pushed us to work hard but it’s all worth it in the end."
