This module will develop your understanding of people's social and cultural experiences in a range of contexts and will prepare you to think about practical support for children's, and young people's lives and rights. You will learn about a range of theoretical perspectives that will help you understand the experiences of children, young people and young adults. As part of this module, you will present key recommendations for improvements to their lives.

This module introduces students to play as the central pedagogy through which infants and young children learn, develop, and flourish. It explores holistic development from conception to age eight, recognising children as relational, embodied, creative, and capable learners. Drawing on developmental knowledge, play theory, and practice-based examples, students examine how play supports neurological, cognitive, emotional, social, physical, and communicative development. The module foregrounds inclusive, responsive pedagogy and prepares students for professional practice by connecting theory directly to early years settings. Play is also the pedagogy that underpins all other early childhood modules.

This module introduces students to the central role of care, wellbeing, safety, and belonging in early childhood. It explores how nurturing relationships, respectful care routines, and safe environments underpin children’s learning, development, and flourishing. Students examine health, wellbeing, safeguarding, and risk through an ethical and pedagogical lens, recognising care as an active, relational, and professional practice. The module is placement based where students will develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to support young children’s health, safety, and wellbeing within early years settings.

Year 2 modules focus on developing key skills such as emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and reflective practice. You will explore social justice, research methodologies, and contemporary educational issues. You'll have practical experiences in curriculum models and multimodal learning. These modules prepare you for applied research and effective practice in early years education.

This module will provide you with the opportunity to pursue and acquire skills, competencies and experience required for successful development to, and in, a range of potential future career areas.

You will work in newsroom teams to produce multimedia journalism in accordance with industry standards, delivering fast-turnaround news articles every week. This module aims to equip the you with the skills to survive the pace of the newsroom and to meet tight publishing deadlines.

You will have the opportunity to create content and develop their digital proficiencies in the role of multimedia reporters for the Student Online Platform. As ‘beat’ reporters, you will be responsible for designated areas of coverage. In this position you will focus on the importance of research in journalism, filing content regularly and sustaining a professional production routine. You will practice key methods, including digital research methods and qualitative methods used in industry today. You’ll learn the conventions of research and analysis, in order to develop a pitch or story proposal in response to a client brief. Your work will be documented in a digital portfolio.

In this module, as part of your early childhood or education degree, you will extend your critical understanding of theory and research from a range of social science disciplines used to explore and analyse the lives and experiences of children and young people (including education, psychology, sociology, human geography and social policy). You will explore issues of social justice, critically considering:

how these aspects are addressed within key policies, organisations (including grassroots and third sector), and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child;
the micro- and macro- influences on the lives of children and young people, such as biological, social, economic, political, cultural and/or generational influences, with particular attention paid to issues of inequality and intersectionality;
the extent to which educators/practitioners influence these aspects of the lives of children and young people;
children and young people's rights and the extent to which they actively influence these aspects of their own lives.

During the module, your campus-based studies will be complemented by engagement in educational and community settings, allowing you to develop a critical awareness of current issues relating to the lives of children and young people, and to actively engage in consideration of how drawing upon research evidence from social science disciplines can enable you to affect change in the lives of the children and young people with whom you work/may work in the future.

Building Research Communities develops knowledge and understanding of research theories, concepts and processes and the research skills required for independent, ethical and applied research in early childhood and education. This module is rooted in the principles of research-informed teaching which includes learning about research findings in their field of study; learning research processes and methodologies and learning to work in research 'mode' which builds on pedagogical principles of enquiry-based, active, collaborative and experiential learning, supporting students to engage in critique and discussion in a 'research community of practice' (Lave and Wenger, 1998).

At Level 5: Developing Research Communities focuses on developing your understanding of research theories, concepts and processes and the research skills required for independent, ethical and applied research. The module will introduce you to key issues in research methodology and design, such as how to develop research questions, use research literature, address ethical issues, design data collection tools and organise and analyse data. You will explore a range of qualitative research techniques, including interviews, questionnaires, observational studies and documentary research. You will also be encouraged to reflect on wider questions about how educational and early childhood research helps us to understand social worlds and can impact policy and practice. This module will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out an applied research project at Level 6.

In this module, you will be supported by a range of resources to develop research, analytical, and presentation skills, alongside ongoing reflective writing. The module is assessed entirely by coursework with a mixture of individual and group learning experiences. You are assessed individually.

This module introduces ethical and relational approaches to sustainability in education, early childhood and inclusive settings. You will explore how learning environments, everyday practice and pedagogy can support sustainability, wellbeing and engagement.

You will investigate sustainability challenges, examine educational spaces through the concept of the Commons, and explore alternative approaches to education. You will design and implement a small regenerative change in a real or fictional setting and evaluate its impact using simple observational tools.

The module develops your skills in critical thinking, collaborative working, professional communication and sustainable practice, preparing you to promote inclusive and sustainable approaches in education.

This module deepens students’ understanding of how learning unfolds through everyday interactions, play, and relationships in early childhood settings. Focusing on observation, listening, and in-the-moment decision-making, students explore how educators balance child-initiated and adult-led pedagogy to support participation, wellbeing, learning, and transitions. The module places strong emphasis on enabling environments, including indoor, outdoor, and nature-based pedagogies, and supports students to plan responsively by working with children’s interests, rights, and lived experiences.

This module explores partnership with parents, families, and communities as a relational and pedagogical practice. Students examine how learning is co-constructed across home, setting, and community contexts, and how culturally responsive and inclusive pedagogies support children’s wellbeing, identity, and belonging. The module foregrounds communication, respect for diverse family lives, and ethical engagement with parents and caregivers. Students are supported to develop professional skills for working collaboratively with families in ways that value difference, promote trust, and strengthen children’s learning and development.

The Applied Education with Early Years Year 3 modules focus on leadership, research, and global perspectives in early childhood education. You'll do independent research projects and explore Montessori literacy practices. You'll develop teamwork and communication skills through placements. With a focus on critical thinking, inclusivity, and professional development, this final year prepares you for careers in early childhood education.

Students will have the opportunity to initiate a small-scale applied research study that addresses an issue, topic or challenge within the broad field of education, special education or early childhood. The applied research will support professional formation and contribute to knowledge within the wider community.
The module is designed to guide students towards design, implementation and completion of an applied research project. Students will develop a range of theoretical, methodological, academic and practical skills and knowledge. Students will apply these in a practice context to address a real-world problem through ethical research practice, professional engagement and problem solving leading to research dissemination.
The chosen area of applied research will be demonstrably linked to the personal interests and professional aspirations of the student within the field of education, special education or early childhood. Through supervision students will shape and agree a proposal for a viable and ethical applied research project.

This module bridges your academic achievements with workplace and entrepreneurial demands, developing innovation, professional capabilities, business acumen, and mental resilience. By recognizing and harnessing the key skills of enterprise – creativity, leadership, adaptability, collaboration – you will prepare yourself for the rapidly changing workplace of Industry 5.0. You will apply leadership approaches to a real or simulated professional context, using research, policy, and professional standards to design a meaningful improvement initiative. Throughout the module, you will also reflect on your own leadership identity, values, and positionality.
By the end, you will be able to critically analyse leadership practice, make informed and ethical decisions, and demonstrate the skills needed for leading positive change. The module also provides a strong foundation for progression to the MA Education and Leadership at UEL.

This module supports students to critically explore and enact contemporary early years pedagogies through curriculum-making in practice. Drawing on theoretical perspectives, curriculum frameworks, and real-world contexts, students examine how pedagogy is shaped through relationships, environments, play, multimodality, creativity, arts, digital literacies, and cultural contexts. Particular attention is given to working with babies and toddlers, creativity, and enabling children to make sense of the wider world. Students are encouraged to take an inquiry-based and reflective approach, positioning themselves as thoughtful, ethical, and responsive early childhood pedagogues.

This capstone module provides students with the opportunity to synthesise, curate, and critically reflect upon placement evidence accumulated across the programme, presenting it as a coherent professional practice portfolio aligned to the Early Childhood Graduate Practitioner Competencies (ECGPCs). Rather than generating new placement data, students focus on making sense of their professional journey over three years, drawing together observation records, reflective writing, artefacts, feedback, and practice evidence to demonstrate their developing professional identity, ethical stance, and readiness for graduate practice. The module supports students to critically reflect on inclusive, anti-discriminatory, and socially just practice, to evidence ethical engagement with children’s voices, and to articulate their professional learning in forms appropriate to early childhood contexts. Emphasis is placed on reflective synthesis, professional judgement, and effective communication as students prepare for transition into employment, leadership pathways, or further study.

How you'll learn

Based at the School of Childhood and Social Care in Stratford, you'll explore the significance of early childhood in different cultures and societies. This is particularly relevant given the ethnic and cultural diversity that exists in east London and, indeed, among UEL's student intake and staff. We use that diversity to our advantage by incorporating discussion time into our teaching.

All of your lecturers are research-active and draw upon their own and others' publications to enhance your understanding of key themes and concepts.

Guided independent study

When not attending timetabled lectures you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will typically involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for exams. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, Microsoft Teams, and Moodle.

Students are supported with any academic or subject-related queries by an Academic Adviser, module leaders, and former and current UEL students. If you need a bit of extra help with certain skills such as academic writing, English, maths, or statistics, our Academic Tutors offer workshops, drop-in sessions, and one-to-one appointments to help our students achieve their potential. You can receive advice and guidance on all aspects of the IT systems provided by the university from our IT Service Desks located on all three campuses. Our Student Support hubs in Docklands and Stratford feature centralised helpdesks to cater to your every need. We have new, modern library facilities on both campuses offering inspirational environments for study and research. Libraries contain resources in print and digital formats, a range of study spaces, and a dedicated librarian who can assist with your learning.

Fieldwork

The subject of early childhood is only relevant when it is applied to the reality which exists outside UEL's walls. That's why we take your learning off campus and give you the chance to work on real-life projects that benefit society directly. This fieldwork will not only broaden your own practical experiences but allow you to observe the practice of professionals as you do so.

Dedicated personal tutor

You'll be taught by staff with relevant experience and practice to ensure you learn from real-life experience and research. We encourage an educational experience that is active, social, collaborative, engaging, and student-owned. You will have access to a variety of resources ensuring your learning experience goes beyond the classroom.

Our aim is to prepare our students for a broad range of careers so that they can make amazing contributions to their communities. When you arrive, we'll introduce you to your personal tutor. This is the member of staff who will provide academic guidance, be a support throughout your time at UEL, and who will show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer.

UEL provides also support and advice for disabled students and those with specific learning difficulties (SPDs). Your overall workload consists of class and online tutor-led sessions, individual learning, and practical activities.

Workload

Each year you will spend around 300 hours of timetabled learning and teaching activities. These may be lectures, workshops, seminars, and individual and group tutorials. Contact hours may vary depending on each module.

Your timetable

Your individualised timetable is normally available to students within 48 hours of enrolment. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9.00am and 6.00pm. For undergraduate students, Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities, but there may be occasions when this is not possible.

Class sizes

To give you an indication of class sizes, lecture sizes are normally 30 people. However, this can vary by academic year.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment tasks are mainly spread across the year to make the workload manageable. Assessment methods include group work and individual work including essays, presentations, case studies, professional development and practical activities depending on the nature of the course. All grades count towards your module mark. More details will be included in the student handbook and module guides.

The course is assessed entirely by coursework such as essays, video presentations, and a research dissertation. Coursework will include assignments, self-reflective assignments, presentations, and group work.

Our historic Stratford campus is located in one of the best-connected areas of London: close to Stratford's thriving town centre, the 2012 Olympic Park, just 15 minutes from London's West End and 20 minutes from Canary Wharf.

Stratford’s facilities include a state-of-the-art library and learning centre, the majestic Great Hall and specialist laboratories and computing services. The School of Childhood and Social Care and Centre for Clinical Education in Podiatry, Physiotherapy and Sports Science are housed in new buildings. There is also a campus restaurant and bookshop, and a Students' Union café-bar.

Westfield Stratford City - Europe's largest indoor shopping mall - is just one of Stratford's attractions, alongside many other shops, cafés, bars, restaurants and cinemas. Stratford is fast becoming London's new cultural quarter, with Sadler's Wells East and V&A East moving in.
