Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
Course overview
A medical career means harnessing science, developing advanced skills, and making a real difference to people's lives.
No two days are ever the same.
Our MBBS medical degree provides a forward-thinking curriculum to prepare you for a successful medical career. With a strong focus on compassionate patient care, early clinical experience, and academic excellence, the programme equips you with the knowledge and practical skills needed as a doctor.
From the first year of your medical course, you'll gain hands-on experience through placements in GP practices and community health settings, with hospital placements starting from the second year onwards. This means you'll engage with real-world medicine from the start. Technology-enhanced learning and continuous input from healthcare professionals help the course reflect the latest advances and challenges in the medical field.
The MBBS combines a solid foundation in medical science with opportunities to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, resilience, and effective communication. These are the qualities that underpin safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
By graduation, you will have developed the skills and confidence to practise medicine across a variety of clinical environments, from primary care to hospital specialities. As part of your qualification, you will take the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA), a requirement for all UK medical graduates, to join the General Medical Council (GMC) medical register and begin practising as a doctor.
Our MBBS is more than a medical degree: it is your pathway to a fulfilling career in medicine, equipping you to meet the needs of patients and communities while shaping the future of healthcare.

We’re also investing in a new academic building, which will open in September 2027.
Interprofessional learning opportunities
Our new Medical School complements our long-standing School of Health, Sport and Bioscience. You will learn alongside allied health and nursing students to hone your collaborative skills - reflecting the multidisciplinary teams you will work with both on placement and in your future practice.
MBBS professional accreditations
We are working with the General Medical Council (GMC) to gain accreditation for our MBBS degree. The GMC reviews all new UK medical schools every year, following the first cohort from their first year until graduation to ensure our MBBS degree meets the highest standards for medical education in the UK. At the end of this first cycle, the GMC can approve UEL as a body that can award UK primary medical qualifications.
Graduates of our MBBS degree will be eligible to apply to the UK Foundation Programme.
Your future career
A medical degree at the University of East London opens the door to a wide variety of rewarding career opportunities. Employment prospects are excellent.
At the end of your MBBS degree, you will be required to take the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA). All graduates from UK universities must pass this assessment to register with the GMC and practise as a doctor in the UK. For most MBBS graduates, the next step is the UK Foundation Programme (FP). This two-year programme delivers broad medical training and serves as a bridge between medical school and specialist training, supporting the development of essential clinical and professional skills. Following the Foundation Programme, doctors in the UK progress to further training in a chosen speciality, with more than 60 career pathways available.
The most common career pathway is to become a medical doctor (such as a GP, hospital physician, or surgeon). However, UEL medical course graduates will also have access to a wide range of alternative career options, including:
- Public health
- Medical education
- Research
- Healthcare management
- Health journalism
- Medical technology
