Certificates, transcripts and award documents
Request certificates, transcripts and other academic documents from the University of East London (UEL), or find out who to contact if you are unsure which document you need.
The document available to you and how you request it will depend on when you studied, your course and the type of academic record you need.
Which document do I need?
UEL can provide different documents relating to your studies and award.
- Award certificate: Confirms the qualification you completed.
- Transcript: An academic record showing the modules you studied and the results you achieved.
- Diploma Supplement: Provides additional information about your qualification and is normally issued in connection with completion of your award.
- Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR): A secure digital record that may include your academic results and other verified achievements.
- Verification of award letter: An official letter confirming key information about your UEL award.
The documents available will depend on your course and when you studied.
If you are unsure which document you need, contact the Student Hub (for current students) or Contact us before making a request or payment.
How to request your documents
How you request a certificate, transcript or other award document depends on when you studied.
If you studied before November 1992
Check the awarding body shown on your original certificate or other academic records.
Awards made before November 1992 were commonly conferred by the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA), rather than UEL.
The Open University now holds the CNAA award archive and can provide a certificate-style pro-forma or award verification. It cannot verify transcript information.
If your qualification was not awarded by CNAA, contact the original awarding body. If you are unsure who awarded your qualification, contact the Student Hub.
If you studied between November 1992 and 30 June 2003
Contact us before making a request or payment.
The team can check your available student record, confirm which document can be issued and provide the correct UEL request or payment link if needed.
When contacting please provide:
- Your full name at the time you studied
- Your date of birth
- Your student number, if known
- Your course
- Your campus
- Your dates of attendance
Older student records may contain limited information, so your record should be checked before you proceed.
If you studied between 1 July 2003 and 31 March 2014
Contact us before making a request or payment.
The team can confirm whether you need a replacement certificate, transcript or award letter, check what is available for your period of study and provide the appropriate UEL request or payment link.
Do not make a payment through a third-party website unless the Student Hub has confirmed that it is the correct route.
If you studied from 1 April 2014 onwards
Contact us if you need a certificate, transcript, HEAR or other award-related document.
The team can check which documents are available for your course and year of study and direct you to the correct UEL or approved digital service.
Do not make a payment through a third-party website unless the Student Hub has confirmed that it is the correct route.

Current students can raise an enquiry through MyPortal.

Certificates and transcripts FAQs
How long will it take to receive my certificate or document?
UEL expects your first certificate and Diploma Supplement to be delivered no later than 12 weeks after your classification is published, although this is not guaranteed.
Replacement documents, archive searches, World Education Services (WES) and e-DOATAP requests, and requests involving older records may take longer.
Check the confirmation provided with your request or ask the Student Hub for the current estimated processing time before making a payment.
What should I do if I never received my certificate?
First check that the address held by UEL was correct.
If you can access MyPortal, raise an enquiry there. If you no longer have access to your student account, contact the Student Hub on +44 (0)20 8223 4444.
The team can check the status of your certificate and advise you what to do next.
Do not purchase a replacement until UEL has confirmed what happened to the original.
Can I receive my certificate before my graduation ceremony?
Yes. Your certificate may be issued before your graduation ceremony because certificate production is linked to confirmation of your award rather than attendance at graduation.
If more than 12 weeks have passed since your confirmed classification was published and you have not received your certificate, contact the Student Hub.
What happens to my certificate if I do not attend graduation?
Certificates and Diploma Supplements are not normally presented at the graduation ceremony. They are posted to the address held by UEL.
Royal Mail delivery used for these documents does not provide tracking, so make sure the address recorded in UEL Direct is complete and correct.
If you have concerns about your certificate being dispatched or delivered, contact the Student Hub.
How do I order a replacement certificate?
Contact the Student Hub before ordering a replacement.
The team can check your student record, confirm whether a replacement certificate is the correct document and provide the appropriate UEL request and payment link.
Have the following information ready:
- Your name at the time you studied
- Your date of birth
- Your student number, if known
- Your course
- Your award date
Do not make a payment through a third-party website unless the Student Hub has confirmed the correct route.
Can I collect my certificate or replacement document in person?
Yes, but you must arrange collection in advance.
Make your request through MyPortal and wait for confirmation that your document is ready. Follow the collection and identification instructions provided.
Do not travel to campus expecting to collect a document without arranging it first.
Can my certificate or transcript be sent electronically?
UEL Assessment Services produces digital and hard-copy certificates and transcripts, but the format available depends on your award and when you studied.
Eligible HEARs and other verified documents can be accessed and shared electronically through Gradintelligence.
For older or replacement documents, contact the Student Hub to find out whether secure electronic delivery is available.
How can a third party verify my award?
If you are a current or eligible former student, you may be able to share confirmation of your award with an employer or another organisation through the ecert portal.
Log in to the portal and use the available sharing link to send your information directly to the third party.
If you cannot access ecert or are unsure whether it is available for your award, contact the Student Hub before using a paid external verification service.
How do I send my transcript or Diploma Supplement to WES?
If you need to provide UEL documents to World Education Services (WES), contact the Student Hub first.
The team can confirm:
- Which document WES requires
- The current submission process
- The applicable charge
- The correct payment route
Have your WES reference number ready when you contact the team.
UEL may be unable to release documents if you have outstanding fees or other amounts on your student account.
How do I request documents for e-DOATAP?
Start your e-DOATAP application and check which documents are required for your case.
e-DOATAP commonly requires an award certificate, transcript and a Certificate of Place of Study issued by the University.
Contact the Student Hub or Assessment Services with your e-DOATAP application or reference number and any form provided by e-DOATAP. The team can confirm your record and send institutional documents through the required route.
What if another institution awarded my qualification?
Not every qualification connected with a UEL course is necessarily awarded solely by UEL.
This can include older CNAA awards, professional or industry qualifications and some joint or double awards delivered with partner institutions.
Check your certificate or course documentation to identify the awarding organisation.
If another institution or professional body awarded your qualification, contact that organisation for your documents.
If you are unsure who the awarding body was, contact the Student Hub with your course title, study dates, teaching institution and any documents you still have.
What should I do if my name has changed?
Contact the Student Hub before requesting a replacement or amended document.
UEL will need to check your student record and may require official evidence of your name change before an amendment can be considered.
If you are a current student, keep your personal details up to date through UEL Direct/My Record.
How will my name appear on my certificate?
Your certificate will use the name held on your official UEL student record when your award is conferred.
Before completing your studies, check that your name is correct in UEL Direct and matches your identity documents.
If your details are incorrect, contact the Student Hub as soon as possible.
Can I receive my documents if I owe money to UEL?
Outstanding tuition fees or other debt to UEL may affect the release of your transcript, final award certificate or other documents.
Contact the Income and Credit Control team to check your balance and find out what you need to do.
Email creditcontrol@uel.ac.uk or call +44 (0)20 8223 7333
Once the account issue has been resolved, check with the Student Hub that any hold on your documents has been removed.
