Contextual offers
At the University of East London (UEL), we believe your potential matters. Contextual offers are a way for us to make fair, informed decisions - recognising that some applicants face greater challenges on the path to higher education.
If you're eligible, you may receive an offer with qualifications lower than our standard entry requirements.
What is a contextual offer?
A contextual offer is a reduced entry offer that considers your personal circumstances, not just your grades.
At the University of East London, we look at the wider context of your achievements. This includes your school or college, personal background, and the opportunities available to you. If you meet certain criteria, you may receive a lower offer than the standard entry requirements.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible for a contextual offer if one or more of the following applies:
- You live in an area with low progression to higher education (based on UCAS data)
- You have been in local authority care, or are a care leaver
- You are eligible for Free School Meals
- You have a disability or mental health condition – including learning differences and long-term health conditions.
- Your parents did not attend university
- You have caring responsibilities
Eligibility is assessed automatically when you apply through UCAS. You do not need to apply separately for a contextual offer.
What this means for you
A contextual offer does not change your course or qualification. It provides a fairer way to access higher education based on your potential.
Once you start your course, you will have access to academic and pastoral support to help you succeed and prepare for your future career.
What happens next?
- Apply to UEL through UCAS as normal
- We assess your application, including any contextual factors
- If you're eligible, your offer will reflect this and there are no extra steps needed
- You'll be able to accept or decline your offer through UCAS Hub
Frequently asked questions
Does a contextual offer affect my place on the course?
No. All students, regardless of how they received their offer, study the same course, with the same support and the same degree at the end.
Will my offer letter say it's a contextual offer?
No. Your offer letter will simply state your entry requirements. There is no mark or label to distinguish contextual from standard offers.
I'm a mature student - does this apply to me?
It may do – depending on your circumstances and experience. We also have specific guidance for mature learners, including those returning to education after a break or those who have no formal qualifications.
What if I don't meet my contextual offer grades?
Contact our applicant engagement team as soon as possible. We review each case individually and may be able to help.
