Selection information — BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult)
As part of your application to BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) at the University of East London, you will be invited to take part in a selection process which includes a numeracy and literacy test. This helps us assess your suitability for nurse training and your readiness to meet professional standards.

Phase 1 - Numeracy and Literacy test FAQs
How do I confirm my attendance?
The date and time of your interview can be found on your Applicant Portal. Your login instructions were sent to you separately.
Before attending, you must confirm your place by choosing one of the following options:
- Accept the interview invitation
- Decline the invitation
- Request an alternative date
If you do not confirm your attendance by the stated deadline, we may allocate your space to another candidate due to high demand.
If you have accepted but cannot attend on the day for a valid reason, we will try to reschedule your interview where possible.
Can I request an alternative date?
Yes. You can request an alternative date through the Applicant Portal. Your login instructions were sent to you separately.
We will try to reschedule candidates who request an alternative date into the next available slot. If this is not possible, we will contact you to let you know.

On arrival, please report to the main reception.
What should I expect on the day?
When you arrive, please go to the reception and register for the Phase 1 selection event.
During the session, you will:
- Complete brief administrative checks, including presenting a valid photographic ID
- Receive a welcome from the Head of Pre-registration Nursing and the Course Leader
- Prepare for and complete the numeracy and literacy tests
The Phase 1 selection event will last approximately two hours, depending on the number of candidates attending.
Before you arrive
We recommend that you:
- Plan your journey in advance
- Use public transport where possible
- Arrive at least 15 minutes early
If you arrive after the start time, you will not be able to sit the tests.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring the following items with you on the day:
- Valid photographic ID, such as a passport, photo driving licence or national identity card. You will not be admitted if you do not bring valid photographic ID.
- A black pen
- A calculator. This must be a standalone calculator. Mobile phone calculators are not permitted.
Can I bring children?
Yes. You may bring children with you, but they must be accompanied by another adult at all times.
Children are not permitted in testing or interview rooms.
Test information
You will complete two tests, each lasting 30 minutes:
- A numeracy test, assessing your ability to work with numbers
- A literacy test, assessing your ability to interpret and reason with written information
These skills are an important part of the course.
Test conditions
The tests are taken under exam conditions. Please note:
- You may use a standard calculator
- Mobile phones are not permitted and must be switched off
- Read each question carefully and manage your time to complete all questions
Preparing for the tests
Candidates tend to perform better if they practise beforehand. We strongly recommend that you:

Pass mark
The pass mark for both the numeracy and literacy tests is 70 per cent.

What to expect after the selection process
We aim to make a decision within three weeks of the Phase 2 selection days. In some cases, this may take longer.
If you have not received a decision within this timeframe, your application is still under consideration.
If your application is unsuccessful, we may consider you for an alternative course at the University of East London. We will contact you by email if this applies.
