International Fencing Camp
The Leon Paul Project hosted an international fencing camp to help prepare the Team GB athletes for their upcoming Olympic qualification event which takes places on 26 and 27 April.
Students from year 1 and 2 BSc Sports Therapy joined lecturer Maria in the athlete clinic to support both British and international fencers in a post-training recovery setting.
Providing placement opportunities like this is a great experience for our student Sport Therapists as well as the athletes who provided very positive feedback to the students. All athletes involved said they would return again if this clinic was provided in the future.
"Today we had the opportunity to experience placement at a Leon Paul international fencing camp. Today helped us gauge the needs of elite athletes (high pressure intense massage!). Being in such a professional environment helped us to conduct ourselves accordingly.
This is beneficial as we gained a little more confidence in a clinical setting as student sport therapists. We really liked how Maria set up a presentation on common fencing injuries before we went into the clinic area.
We were each given a different athlete presenting different problems. Overall, today was an eye opening insight into what the elite sport environment is like. We thoroughly enjoyed how Maria made the whole experience feel for us, her hospitality was really really great. We look forward to working with Maria again in the future."

"It has been great having the Sports Therapy students delivering a much needed service to these high performance athletes at such a vital point in their season. With Olympic qualification around the corner the athletes have been very grateful to have this sport science and therapy support at their training camp this week."

Visit to St. George’s Park
Yesterday the second year Sports Therapy Students visited the home of England Football, St George's Park. As part of the experience, they got to test their fitness and skills on the football pitch, explore the benefits of hydrotherapy, including a 10 degree cold contrast bath, and learn how to test and analyse performance markers in the gym using state-of-the-art technology and equipment.
During the day the students were put through the same activities as those on the England pathways from junior to senior squad players.
Highlights included:
- 1km time trail test (10x lengths of the pitch)
- Hoff testing for return to play football skills and fitness
- Cold contrast bathing
- Hydrotherapy games, recovery and rehab
- Underwater treadmill running biomechanical analysis
- Jump, Nordic Hamstring, and 6sec Watt Bike testing protocols
The day was wrapped up with a very privileged insight into the world of the FA England Football medical team with a presentation delivered by Physiotherapist Lawrence Sonvico.
Lawrence talked about his pathway to his current role in the U18-U20s squads, a case study on returning an injury during the U20 World Cup, and expectations of working in Sport. This was followed by a Q&A which was an insightful experience for all involved.
Thank you to Game Changer Performance for hosting our day and to Lawrence for kindly stepping out of his busy day and talking to us.
