Master of Laws (LLM)
A master’s degree in Laws is a fantastic way for Law graduates to develop a specialisation, or for non-lawyers working in related fields to gain a deeper understanding of legal issues.
Since Law is a vast and diverse subject, we offer a huge amount of flexibility in this general LLM programme. You also have the option of taking one of our specialist pathways that focus on different topics:
- LLM*
- LLM Business and Financial Law*
- LLM Energy and Natural Resources Law
- LLM Human Rights Advocacy*
- LLM International Law*
- LLM FinTech Law
The pathways align to our major research strengths in areas like legal education, international legal research and human rights – but you can study modules from all these areas if you opt for the general LLM.
*These LLMs also have an optional placement year available. Giving you the opportunity, to gain hands on experience and connect what you will have learnt at university to the legal industry. Placements will be provided and supported either by us or a partner organisation where you'll gain worthwhile and practical real-world experience in handling issues relating to aspects of social welfare law. This is a unique and exceptional opportunity for you to work in law. International students wanting to do the Placement year must indicate so upon application. This will add a full-time year onto your study.
Our LLM is ideal training for paralegals, journalists, NGO and charity workers, policy advisors, consultants, lawyers, those working in business and finance or anyone who will benefit from a legal education in their career.
Other than learning valuable information in matters related to both, international law and business and financial law, I acquired skills in redaction, research, and referencing.
All this while receiving the continuous support of my professors, programme leader, and various departments at UEL. Due to the responsiveness and professionalism of everyone in the law department, COVID did not affect the quality of learning, and I received a lot more than I expected.”

- All LLM students can complete a work-based learning module or project and gain credits instead of completing a dissertation.
I enrolled in the LLM Transitional Justice and Conflict course in Sept 2020. I am happy with the quality of instructors I have come across in this programme. Instead of traditional test assessment, we were required to write essays and case studies and/or projects to be submitted at the end of the semester. I particularly enjoyed writing about issues and topics that were interesting to me. The instructors gave me helpful feedback during the semester. I had the opportunity to serve as a course rep and also to volunteer for the Centre of Human Rights in Conflict podcast. I feel prepared to enter the academic and professional world of transitional justice and conflict.’’
