Library Rules
We have rules in place to help us maintain an environment that is conducive to study.
They are intended to safeguard the interests of all library users and to ensure that everyone can make use of our collections and services freely and fairly.
Whilst our staff are committed to providing a high-quality service, students are also expected to behave responsibly and considerately when using our libraries.
Access
- A valid UEL, SCONUL or Alumni identity card is required for access to both libraries. You should keep your ID card with you at all times, and must show it to a member of staff or security when asked to do so.
- If you have forgotten or lost your student ID, you must report to the library security desk and sign in to access the libraries. You are expected to retrieve or replace your ID card as soon as possible, and access may be denied in future if you do not.
- For the security of all, you must not give anyone else your ID card, or use it to allow others (including fellow students) to access the libraries.
Conduct
- Staff and students have the right to carry out their work and study in the University libraries without intimidation or aggression from others. This includes verbal abuse, racial or sexual harassment, and intimidating behaviour. Any such incident will be dealt with under the University's Disciplinary Procedures and can lead to the withdrawal of access to library facilities.
- Users are responsible for their own property at all times and should keep their belongings with them. Unattended possessions may be removed if they are likely to cause a security or health and safety hazard and given to security staff as lost property.
- LALS does not accept liability for lost work or the late submission of work because of a failure to provide any service due to circumstances beyond its control.
Use of Library spaces
- Silence must be maintained in designated areas and conversation should be kept to a minimum in quiet areas.
Earphones must be used when listening to audio and the sound must be inaudible to others. - Mobile phones must be set to silent mode and calls are not to be made in silent study rooms or areas. Students must cooperate with staff if asked to reduce the volume of a call or take a call elsewhere.
- Library users must assist in maintaining a clean and tidy environment by disposing of any rubbish in the bins provided.
- Sleeping is not allowed in the libraries for health and safety reasons, and students should not rearrange furniture or bring in bedding material for this purpose. Students found sleeping in the library will be woken by staff, regardless of the time of day. Any student needing support with accommodation should contact the Hub for support.
- Work appropriate for studio/workshop spaces must not be carried out in the libraries. This includes modelling, cutting, gluing, painting and large drawings.
- Users found damaging or stealing Library, Archives and Learning Services property will be subject to the full University Disciplinary Procedures.

- You need to have a valid UEL identity card to borrow items from the libraries using the self-service machines. If you do not have your ID card or it isn’t working, please speak to library staff.
- You are responsible for the safekeeping of all items on loan to you, and for replacement costs for any items lost or damaged beyond repair.

- Any students who want to film or photograph library spaces need to obtain permission from the relevant campus library manager beforehand.
- Anyone filming or photographing the library spaces without permission may be asked to cease by library staff.
- Permission to film is given on a case by case basis, and is granted on the understanding that there will no disruption to those using the library for study, and that any library user caught in shot has given consent for their image to be used.
