Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

At the University of East London, we recognise that valuable learning happens in many settings - through previous study, professional training, work, volunteering, or wider life experience. Our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process allows applicants and students to have relevant prior learning formally recognised towards a UEL qualification.

 

Benefits of RPL

RPL may allow you to:

  • Gain entry onto a course if you do not meet standard entry requirements.
  • Receive credit towards part of a programme.
  • Enter directly into a later stage of a course.
  • Avoid repeating learning you have already completed successfully.

How RPL is assessed

The University assesses prior learning by comparing your knowledge, skills, and experience against the learning outcomes of the UEL course or modules you wish to study. Credit is awarded when prior learning is current, relevant, and equivalent in level and content to the learning claimed.

Types of RPL

  • Recognition of Prior Certificated Learning (RPCL): Learning formally assessed and certificated through previous study, professional qualifications, or accredited training.
  • Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL): Learning gained through professional practice, employment, volunteering, or other relevant experience that is not formally certificated. 

Credit limits

In line with UEL Academic Regulations, students may normally receive:

  • Up to two-thirds of credits for an award through RPCL.
  • Up to one-half of credits for an award through RPEL. 

Where both RPCL and RPEL are combined, total credit will normally not exceed two-thirds of the qualification. Certain professionally accredited courses may have additional restrictions on RPL use.

Applying for RPL

Applications are considered individually and may require supporting evidence, such as academic transcripts, module specifications, professional certificates, portfolios, reflective statements, interviews, or references. The University makes decisions using academic judgement in accordance with UEL Academic Regulations.

Applicants are encouraged to discuss potential RPL claims with the relevant Course Leader as early as possible, ideally during the application process, to receive guidance and timely consideration of their application.
