If you have applied for a Secondary or Further Education teacher training course, this page explains what happens after your interview and how to prepare for starting your course.

If you receive an offer and accept it, we will send guidance to help you prepare for your course.
Preparing for the course
Teacher training is academically demanding and professionally focused. Before your course begins, we encourage you to:
- read widely about education, teaching and learning
- strengthen your subject knowledge in your specialist area
- reflect on any experience you have of working with young people or adult learners
- begin thinking about how subject knowledge is turned into effective classroom teaching
As part of your training, you should also complete a short placement in a primary school.
Subject preparation
Your course may include subject-specific preparation.
This could include:
- Reviewing key topics in your subject
- Preparing teaching materials
- Completing subject knowledge tasks
You will receive full details through your Applicant Portal.
Recommended reading
You will be given reading lists when your course starts.
To prepare in advance, focus on:
- Your subject area
- How your subject is taught in schools or colleges
- General teaching and learning strategies
Reflective practice
You will be expected to reflect on your learning throughout the course.
You can start now by writing about:
- Why you want to teach
- Your subject strengths
- Areas you want to improve
DBS and pre-enrolment checks
Before starting your course, you must complete the required checks, including:
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
- Occupational health clearance.
We will contact you with instructions.
Support for dyslexia and learning differences
If you think you may have dyslexia or another specific learning difficulty, contact the Disability and Dyslexia Team before your course starts.
They can advise on the assessment and support available.
