Helena Kennedy Foundation FAQs
Who can nominate me, and how should I approach them?
Typically, someone at your current school or college - such as your tutor, progression adviser, or head of department- submits the nomination. Ask early, share a brief CV plus a draft personal statement, and check whether your school or college has its own internal deadline (often earlier than the external one).
What makes a strong nomination/application?
Tell a clear story of barriers you’ve faced, what you did to overcome them, and why university is the logical next step. Back this up with evidence (attendance, grades, responsibilities, caring/work commitments), a simple budget for essential study costs, and a realistic plan for your first year at university.
If I’m awarded, how can the bursary be used?
Awards like this are generally intended for essential study-related costs—e.g., travel to campus, books/equipment, connectivity, professional clothing for placements, or short-term living expenses. Follow the instructions in your award letter and keep records/receipts for anything you spend.
Will this affect Student Finance or other funding I receive?
Charitable bursaries usually don’t reduce your student finance entitlement, but they may count as income for some means-tested benefits or university hardship assessments. If you receive benefits, check the rules for reporting one-off grants and keep your award confirmation for reference.
Can I be nominated if I’m a mature learner, planning a gap year or don't have a firm offer?
The scheme supports progression from further education to a UK university in general, not a single institution. Mature learners and those with non-linear routes can be competitive if the nomination explains your pathway and readiness. If your start date or university choice changes, confirm with the foundation whether your nomination still applies.
