Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship

Award Summary

If you graduated from UEL you may be eligible for a postgraduate course discount. If you progress directly with no gap year, you may receive a 15% discount. For direct progression graduates achieving an Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1), you may receive a 20% discount, whilst direct progression graduates achieving First-Class Honours (1st), may receive a 25% discount.

Alternatively, graduates joining us at a later stage may receive a 10% discount.

Eligibility Summary

You should previously have been awarded an undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree, professional doctorate or postgraduate research degree from UEL or one of its predecessor institutions, such as the Polytechnic of East London.

What is the University of East London (UEL) Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship Scheme?

1. It is a loyalty scheme offered by UEL to its graduate students to pursue further study whilst saving on tuition fees. This scheme is open to UK and international students studying full or part-time postgraduate courses. 

Criteria 

2. Students who meet the criteria below will be considered under the Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship: 

  • Any UEL undergraduate or postgraduate who fully completes their intended degree programme will automatically be eligible for a 10% discount off a postgraduate course at UEL.
  • Any UEL student who progresses directly onto a postgraduate taught or research course with no gap year between their studies will automatically be eligible to receive a 15% discount on tuition fees. 

Undergraduate students progressing directly to Postgraduate study 

3. For direct progression graduates achieving First-Class Honours (1st) you will automatically be eligible to receive a 25% discount 

4. For direct progression graduates achieving Upper Second Class Honours (2:1) you will automatically be eligible to receive a 20% discount. 

Excludes: 

  • PG Cert programmes or Top-Up courses
  • Online or distance learning
  • Short courses
  • Courses with less than 120 credits
  • If you progress on to a full degree programme after the completion of a short course or courses worth less than 120 credits, you will not qualify for the alumni discount.
  • PG Diploma students returning to top up to a full master’s (60 credits), are not entitled to an alumni discount for the Master's course.

Exceptions:

  • PGCE students will be eligible to receive the Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship if they progress on to an MA or MSc programme.
  • PGCE students, PCET, and Architecture RIBA II programmes are inclusive of the Alumni Scholarship Scheme. 

Application process 

5. There is no application necessary. The discount will be applied to your student record automatically. 

Fee waiver details 

6. If awarded, students will receive a discount on their tuition fees when they enrol on one of our postgraduate courses starting September 2025 or January 2026

7. The fee waiver is only valid for the normal duration of the course, it will not be renewed or extended beyond this term to cover repeat modules.

General terms and conditions

8. If an awarded student decides to change the programme, the student will be entitled to keep the discount provided that the new course and mode of study meet the eligibility criteria. All changes must be approved by the Director of Student Recruitment and Marketing.

9. If an awarded student decides to withdraw, the discount will terminate at the date of withdrawal. The discount may be reversed.

10. Once a period of study has commenced, should a discount holder suspend their studies through the proper channels, their discount is similarly suspended and will recommence on the resumption of studies. This can be held for a maximum of one year, starting from the date of their suspension.

11. If the student’s status changes during their study, as a result of information not being provided at the point of application, and the student becomes ineligible, the University reserves the right to revoke the discount and claim back any fee waiver incorrectly made to the student.

12. The Alumni discount may not be held in conjunction with any other scholarships. If awarded, you will only be entitled to one scholarship, one bursary or an alumni discount, whichever is the highest to be deducted from your tuition fees due. Please see our Fees Policy.

13. If a student breaks the University regulations and withdraws from study, the discount will be immediately terminated, and no further support will be available.

14. A complaint is normally a specific concern related to a procedural error, irregularity, or maladministration in admissions procedures or policies. If you are dissatisfied with any aspect of the administration of your discounts, please contact us in the first instance so that an informal resolution can be sought. This may be done in writing by emailing studentfunding@uel.ac.uk.

Postgraduate Alumni Discount FAQs

What counts as “direct progression”?

It generally means moving to the next available postgraduate intake immediately after finishing your UEL degree, with no break in studies. If your start date slips to a later intake, you’re usually treated as a returning graduate.

How do I prove I’m eligible as a UEL (or predecessor) graduate?

Keep a digital copy of your degree certificate or official transcript showing your award title, classification (if applicable), and graduation date. If your award is from a predecessor institution (e.g., Polytechnic of East London), include that documentation too.

I’m studying part-time, on a research programme, or via blended delivery—am I included?

Eligibility follows the official mode/type of your programme. Some routes are pro-rated or handled differently, so ask Admissions to confirm how your course is treated.
