UK undergraduate funding
Funding your undergraduate degree at UEL
As an undergraduate student, you can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of your course. The loan is paid directly to the university, so you don't have to pay any fees upfront.
You only begin to repay the loan once you've finished your degree and are earning more than £25,000 a year. If you still have a balance after 30 years, the loan is automatically cancelled.
You can apply for a tuition loan on the Student Finance website.
Maintenance loan
You might also be able to get a maintenance loan to help with your living expenses, such as food, travel, and housing.
The maximum amount you can receive is £13,762.
You can apply for a maintenance loan on the Student Finance website.
Additional government funding
The government offers several other types of support to help with your studies:
- Parents' Learning Allowance
- Adult Dependants' Grant
- Childcare Grant
- Disabled Students’ Allowance
Additionally, many students on nursing and allied health courses starting from September 2020 receive a payment of at least £5,000 a year from the government.
Find more information on supplementary grants on the Student Finance website.
Information for residents of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
The funding information on this page is for home students who are residents of England.

EU funding eligibility for courses beginning from August 2021 onwards
Due to the UK's departure from the European Union, the UK government has changed its policy on student finance for EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals.
Starting with the 2021/22 academic year, students from these countries who are not registered as having 'settled' or 'pre-settled' status in the UK will no longer be eligible for home/UK fee status. This also means they will not be able to get financial support from Student Finance England.
These students will now be required to pay the same tuition fees as other international students.
Additional funding and support
Beyond government funding, the University of East London (UEL) offers a variety of support options to help you with your studies.
All new undergraduate students receive core textbooks as e-books at no extra cost.
You'll also have the opportunity to apply for our extensive range of scholarships and bursaries. We award over £2 million through these schemes each year, so it's a great idea to apply.
External funding options
Many external organisations offer financial assistance to students. Below is a list of potential funding sources for additional support:
- Bank Of England Scholarship Programme
- The Student Disability Association Fund
- The Portal Trust
- The Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust
- The Newby Trust
- Walcot Foundation
- Wellcome Trust
- Royal Institute of British Architects
Alternatively, you can visit the Scholarship Search website.
