Join UEL’s high-performance wheelchair basketball programme and train in an elite environment built for athletes who want to compete at BUCS level and progress in the national game.
Programme overview
The wheelchair basketball scholarship programme offers extensive on-court and off-court support, with a strong development focus to help you keep pushing your level.
You’ll be part of a performance squad that trains and competes alongside UEL’s wider High-Performance Sport programme.
Training and performance
As a scholar, you will have opportunities to be on court at least four times per week across individual and team sessions. Depending on selection and performance, you may also access further opportunities through club competition.
Competition and pathway
UEL competes in BUCS wheelchair basketball leagues and cup competitions, giving you regular high-level university fixtures.
Scholars also benefit from a clear pathway into the national performance system through East London Phoenix, a British Wheelchair Basketball High-Performance Partnership and one of the universities that hosts a women’s Premier League team.
This connection creates real opportunities to train within a high-performance club environment while studying.
What you get as a scholar
Wheelchair basketball scholars receive support on and off court, including:
- High-level coaching and structured training.
- A scholarship package for 1st-team players that includes bursaries, a support package, and exclusive kit.
- Access to performance facilities, including UEL’s private athlete facility, Aqua East.

Who is eligible for a wheelchair basketball scholarship?
Scholarships are for performance-level players who want to compete in BUCS and progress within the national wheelchair basketball pathway while studying at UEL.
How often will I train and play?
Scholars train at least four times per week across individual and team sessions, with additional club-level opportunities depending on selection and performance.
What support does the scholarship include?
You’ll receive high-level coaching plus off-court performance support, with access to UEL’s training facilities, strength and conditioning, and wider athlete services.
What competitions and pathways are available?
You’ll compete in BUCS leagues and cups, with a performance pathway through East London Phoenix, UEL’s British Wheelchair Basketball High-Performance Partnership and Premier League base.
How do I apply?
Apply online with a playing CV and recent video highlights. If shortlisted, you’ll be invited to a trial or assessment with the coaching team.
