About East London Phoenix
East London Phoenix is the University of East London’s high-performance franchise partnership for basketball and wheelchair basketball. The Phoenix Women’s Premier League team is UEL’s first sporting franchise and plays home games at SportsDock.
Over the past decade, UEL has grown into one of the UK’s strongest dual-career sport universities. The Phoenix programme builds on that by giving athletes the chance to develop on and off the court while studying.
The franchise now includes three competitive squads:
- Women’s Premier League (wheelchair basketball)
- Men’s Division 3 National League (basketball)
- Women’s Division 2 National League (basketball)
Join us and be part of a growing London franchise.
Women’s Premier League (Wheelchair basketball)
The British Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Premier League (WPL) is the first professional women’s wheelchair basketball league of its kind in the world, and the first professional para-sport league in the UK.
East London Phoenix is a British Wheelchair Basketball High-Performance Partnership and one of the universities hosting a WPL team. The league expanded to five teams for the 2024/25 season.
We also run a second women’s wheelchair basketball squad under the Phoenix name. This team competes in Division 1 of the Women’s League and began its campaign in November 2024.
Men’s Division 3 National League (Basketball)
The National Basketball League (NBL) is the UK’s largest basketball league, with a national competition structure for senior and junior teams.
This is Phoenix’s first season in Men’s Division 3, and the team are conference champions. The goal for the next season is promotion to Men’s Division 2.
Women’s Division 2 National League (Basketball)
The women’s team had a strong first season in the NBL:
- 3rd in their conference
- Reached the second round of the playoffs
The focus this season is to win the conference and push for a national title.
