Midwifery Apprenticeship BSc (Hons)
About the course
The Midwifery Apprenticeship (3 years) prepares you to deliver effective, safe and responsive care to women. It develops the knowledge, skills and behaviours you need to practise as a registered midwife and gain professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
You will also graduate with a BSc (Hons) Midwifery degree. The course is founded on the NMC Standards for Pre-Registration Midwifery Education (NMC, 2019).
Midwives support women and families through pregnancy, birth, labour and the postnatal period.
Delivery
This apprenticeship mirrors the undergraduate full-time degree. You will complete the same modules, undertake the same assessments, and carry out placements with protected practice learning time, alongside time at university.
Entry Requirements
120 UCAS points from an equivalent Level 3 qualification:
- Functional Skills Maths and English L2 or GCSE 4-6 (A-C)
- A Levels
- BTEC Extended Diploma – DMM
- BTEC Diploma – D*D*
- Access to HE Diploma
- International Baccalaureate – 24 points, including a minimum of 15 points at Higher Level
English Language Requirements
IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 7.0 in 7.0 in Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening (or recognised equivalent).
If you do not meet the academic English language requirements for your course, you may be eligible to enrol on a Pre-sessional English course. The length of the course will depend on your current level of English and the requirements for your degree programme. We offer a 5-week and an 11-week pre-sessional course.
Responsibilities and duty of the apprentice
The programme is designed to prepare you to meet the NMC requirements for registration and to be ready for the midwife’s role. That means building the knowledge, skills and attitudes to deliver high-quality care to women and their families.
You will also develop personally and professionally, so you can practise effectively in different settings, working independently and in collaboration with other professionals.
End Point Assessment (EPA)
You will complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) that is fully integrated with the NMC requirements. An external EPA assessor will attend the Progression and Award Board to ratify that you have completed all required elements to gain NMC registration.
Fees
Fees per apprentice for the whole duration (paid on a monthly basis and are an estimate):
- Levy employer: £27,000 – an estimated £562 per month from company levy.
- Non-levy employer: please email degreeapprenticeships@uel.ac.uk or call 020 8223 2337 for more information. The apprentice will not be required to pay any fees.
The BSc (Hons) Midwifery Apprenticeship 3-year programme will be funded by the employing Trust's apprenticeship levy, and students will be paid the equivalent of a maternity support worker for the duration of the programme.
Progression
Midwives can work across community, antenatal, labour ward and postnatal settings. You may also choose to specialise (for example, home births or neonatal intensive care), which may involve further study.
