UEL has teamed up British Rowing and London Youth Rowing to open a new performance rowing pathway in East London.
The GB Rowing Team's Start programme targets both UEL students and young people from year 10 upwards with or without a background in rowing but with the potential to be future Olympians.
In basic terms, rowing is uses oars as levers to propel the boat. Successful rowers are typically above average height as it favours their longer limbs, this is the basis for the minimum criteria below. Beyond height rowing is a strength endurance sport with races typically taking 6-8 minutes.
We use a couple of short but effective tests that identify if an athlete can be trained in such a way that they could succeed at international level. As the tests are designed to identify potential, previous experience of the tests is not required.
The right physical characteristics are of course not the only factor that is needed to achieve that ultimate prize of an Olympic gold medal. You also need commitment, the ability to train hard and the right mental attitude. Even with all the physical capabilities described above if you don’t make the full commitment to training and make sacrifices where necessary then even the most talented person will not make it.
The UEL Student and Start groups both train from the London Regatta Centre, just a short DLR or 20 minute walk from the UEL Docklands Campus. We have an excellent fleet of well cared for boats and direct access to the 2km stretch of great water. Training schedules vary dependant on group. We aim to row on the water at least twice a week and coaches provide a land training programme to supplement training.
