Dr Jonathan Mann - Academic Tutors (Stratford)

Jonathan manages a very talented and committed team of English writing and mathematics tutors. He is a passionate advocate for literacy and writing as a force for social good. This is reflected in his frequent civic engagement work with communities of writers in east London and overseas. Recently co-editor for the journal Research and Practice in Adult Literacies, Jonathan’s research on the pedagogies of adult literacy and English literature has been published in books and journals in the UK and France, and disseminated at conferences in the UK, South Africa, Malaysia, France, Sweden and Mexico.

Karen Marsh - Senior Academic Tutor

Karen coordinates the English and maths services that are offered by the team of talented and committed Academic Tutors at the Docklands campus. Karen’s personal experience as a first generation, mature graduate directly led to her undertaking a career in teaching. She is a passionate advocate of equality of opportunity for all in education and has worked in the education sector for 15 years.

Dr Adam Winstanley - Academic Tutor - Writing (Stratford)

Dr Adam Winstanley is an Academic Writing Tutor based at our Water Lane and University Square Stratford campuses in Stratford. He supports students with the development of their academic language and writing in workshops, drop-in sessions and one-to-one appointments. He covers topics such as essay planning, grammar and punctuation, referencing and critical thinking. Adam completed his PhD in English at the University of York in 2013. He has previously taught at the University of York, the University of Leeds and Queen Mary, University of London. He has also previously worked as a Lecturer on the New Beginnings course at UEL.

Greta Millwood - Academic Tutor - Maths (Stratford)

Greta Millwood provides support to students and academic staff in mathematics and statistics. She sees
undergraduate and postgraduate students both one-to-one and in groups, and works particularly closely with HSB in the delivery of workshops relating to specialised uses for mathematics in the various degree programmes, both in academic contexts and for employability. Her career to date encompasses over two decades’ experience in teaching and research in Higher Education and secondary schools, and she has authored publications on topics ranging from the translation of computer-software to mathematics pedagogy in undergraduate programmes.

Ioannis Lignos - Academic Tutor - Maths

Dr. Ioannis Lignos supports students at UEL to develop their mathematical, numeracy and statistical skills, as required by their chosen course and career path. He organises workshops and drop-in sessions, and also meets students in one-to-one appointments to discuss their individual needs. Ioannis is a Fellow of the HEA. He has extensive experience in teaching mathematics and computer science in Higher Education, and has previously helped students succeed in their GCSE and A-level exams. He has research interests in mathematics education, student engagement, and discrete mathematics (algorithms and graph theory).

Kerry Bannister - Academic Tutor - Maths

Kerry is an Academic English Tutor at Stratford campus. She has worked in Higher Education for over 15 years in both the US and the UK, teaching and supporting learning in a range of language-related disciplines and roles. She is passionate about language, and enjoys using the breadth of her knowledge and experience to support students in achieving their learning goals by helping them to develop effective academic English and study skills.

Tracy Seraphin - Academic Tutor - Maths

Tracy Seraphin joined UEL in February 2015 and has been supporting students who have difficulty understanding the maths content on their degree programmes as well as delivering numeracy workshops for pre entry programmes and professional skills workshops to help students prepare for the Qualified Teacher Status tests. Tracy can also provide resources to help understand mathematical topics, run targeted workshops and provide one-one appointments. Tracy runs student centred sessions and was shortlisted for ‘Best Support Staff’ category in the Student Led Teaching Awards 2016.

Olga Rodriguez Falcon - Academic Tutor - English

Dr. Olga Rodríguez Falcón has been an Academic Writing Tutor at the UEL since January 2015. In her role, she teaches academic literacies to support students’ transition to university study and their later writing skills development during their journey at the UEL. Olga has 12 years diverse experience working in the Higher Education sector in the UK, both as a subject lecturer and as a study skills tutor. Over the last few years, she has also become an active researcher on widening participation and student experience in the tertiary education sector.

Pinar Kayacan Aksu - Academic Tutor - English

Pinar’s role involves helping students improve their writing and critical thinking skills so that they can confidently become part of an academic community. Her teaching style is identifying students’ individual needs, and creating a stimulating and supportive learning environment for them. Pinar has a background in linguistics, English literature and language teaching, and she has worked in various universities in the UK and in Turkey, teaching English language and literature, study skills and academic writing.
