Statement on new proposals around international students
A statement from Vice-chancellor and President Professor Amanda Broderick on new proposals around international students from the Home Secretary and Education Secretary
“It is important that the government has acknowledged the clear recommendations and findings of the Migration Advisory Committee, which echoes what the broader higher education sector has long recognised: the Graduate Route significantly contributes to creating employment opportunities for international graduates, directly enriching the UK economy.
International students serve as ambassadors, enriching our academic environment with diverse perspectives, knowledge, and cultural experiences. They contribute significantly to research and development, inspiring future global scholars. Moreover, they bolster the UK economy, a £58 million net contribution per UK constituency, equivalent to approximately £560 per citizen.
With a history of providing education over the last 126 years, UEL recognises and celebrates the invaluable contributions of international students to our university community, academic landscape, and the wider UK economy. Over the years, we have witnessed firsthand the immense benefits brought by our diverse international student body, representing over 160 nationalities. It is vital that the UK remains an open and welcoming destination for international students, and that their contribution is recognised and valued.
UEL offers this and any future government support and experience on developing policies and approaches to ensure the UK higher education system maintains its rightful status as one of the world’s best.“
