My name is Mark Wheeler and I serve as a Senior Lecturer and Module Leader on the BA (Hons) Social Work and Post Qualifying Specialist Social Work/Helping Professions Programmes. I also hold workshops (Mental Health) for the BA and MA Social Work Programmes and local authority stakeholders.
I was awarded a BA degree in Psychology (Major) and Philosophy (Minor) from the University of New Hampshire (Durham, New Hampshire) in January 1998 and completed a Master of Social Work degree at the University of New England (Portland, Maine) in 2004 with a focus on Organizational and Community Practice and Cross Cultural Service Delivery. In 2011, I completed a second Master’s Degree in (Clinical) Social Work at the Tavistock Clinic/University of East London.
My professional social work experience has been acquired through practice in a variety of contexts including the voluntary, non-profit, private, and statutory sectors in the United States and the UK. I have served as a community organizer with refugees from southern Sudan, a board governance consultant for grass roots community organizations, a case manager and clinician for homeless women, as well as develop programmes and coordinated youth community projects. Prior to joining the UEL, I worked for 5 years as a Mental Health Social Worker and Care Coordinator in two boroughs of London (UK).
Overview
I am currently working on my PhD which explores the ways in which 2nd generation African-Caribbean men reconstitute a sense of self following psychosis.
