Professor Christian J. van Nieuwerburgh
Professor of Coaching and Positive Psychology
Christian is particularly interested in the integration of coaching and positive psychology, interculturally-sensitive coaching and the creation of positive organisational cultures.
Christian has a rich and diverse professional background. Starting his professional life in the family-owned business, he was a waiter and restaurant manager. While studying at university, he taught English Literature at a high school. For a while, he also taught first year undergraduates at American University of Beirut as a part-time lecturer. Subsequently, he moved into a marketing and business development role for a large coffee distribution firm in Lebanon. After moving to the UK in 1997 to undertake his PhD, Christian undertook a number of part-time jobs, including librarian, book-seller, breakfast waiter and box office assistant in Warwickshire while studying. After a role in the marketing department of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Christian spent about 10 years working in local government. Working for two local authorities' education departments, Christian developed an interest in professional development and the role of coaching in education. During his time in local government, he trained to become an executive coach and was part of the West Midlands Coaching and Mentoring Pool. After leaving local government in 2009, Christian became a part-time academic at the University of East London and set up his own educational consultancy. Christian has been programme leader for the MSc in Coaching Psychology at the University of East London, an adjunct academic on the International MSc in Applied Positive Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University and the Programme Director of the MSc in Coaching and Behavioural Change at Henley Business School. He currently splits his time between his academic role at the University of East London and consultancy work through Growth Coaching International.
Christian is a Belgian citizen living in the UK. He was born in Beirut, Lebanon where he attended the American Community School of Beirut through to graduation. His early experiences of school and university in the context of civil war, terrorism and military invasion convinced him of the merits of a good education. He is passionate about creating positive learning environments and the power of education to create hope and unlock potential. He moved permanently to the UK in 1997 with his wife and one-year-old child. He loves his work, being with his family, writing, seeing the world and riding on his motorcycle.
