Dr Mukhlesur Rahman is an Associate Professor in Pharmaceutical and Natural Product Chemistry and Subject Area Lead of Drug and Chemical Sciences. He has also led the Medicines Research Group since 2020. At UEL, he designed and developed both BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science and MSc Pharmaceutical Science and served as Programme Leader for both courses between 2012-2019.

OVERVIEW

Mukhlesur Rahman completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) and Master of Pharmacy with first class from the University of Dhaka. He completed PhD in Natural Product Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde with Commonwealth Scholarship and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow (over 3 years) at the School of Pharmacy, University of London (currently known as UCL School of Pharmacy).

Dr Rahman has over 17 years of teaching experience in Higher Education Institutions (University of East London, Liverpool John Moores University and Rajshahi University). He also has three years of industrial experiences in pharmaceutical (Organon) and biotechnology (Novacta Biosystem). With his academic and industrial experiences, he designed and developed two brand new courses (BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science and MSc Pharmaceutical) at UEL. Between 2012-2019, he served as Programme Leader of both BSc (Hons) and MSc Pharmaceutical Science courses. Over the years he was involved in curricula developments, validation and revalidation processes for these courses. He has led several new modules over the years.

Dr Rahman is leading the Medicines Research Group at UEL and also leading the Health Sport and Bioscience seminar series. With significant research responsibility, he has established strong research collaboration with top UK universities and organizations including UCL, Strathclyde, Birkbeck, Kew Botanical Garden and Liverpool John Moores University. Outside the UK, he collaborates with several universities in India, Bangladesh, China, Nigeria and Ghana. Dr Rahman is currently serving as associate editor of Journal of Herbal Medicine, Frontiers in Pharmacology and topic editor in Frontiers in Pharmacology on the research topic Natural Products as Potential Therapeutics to Tackle Life-Threatening Infections: From Field to Market.

Dr Rahman has published over 90 research outputs (citations 3,066; h-index 32) and presented his research findings at several international research conferences as invited/ plenary speaker. His outputs have been included in the UEL REF2021 submission under UoA3. Dr Rahman has received the Society for Ethnopharmacology (affiliated to International Society of Ethnopharmacology) annual award (SFE T. Sen Oration award 2021) in recognition of his significant research contribution in the areas of Natural Products Chemistry and Ethnopharmacology.

CURRENT RESEARCH

Dr Rahman's research outputs have been included in the recent REF submission under UoA3.

Funded by The British Council and The Royal Society of Chemistry through the Newton grant, Dr Rahman led in recruiting 24 early career researchers (ECRs) from UK and India and organizing 4 days workshops on "Scopes and challenges for the development of novel antimicrobial agents from Ayurvedic medicinal plants to combat the problem of antimicrobial resistance" at Jadavpur University, India. The event facilitated networking among ECRs and scientists, RSC and British Council officials, physicians and herbal manufacturers.

With QR GCRF fund, Dr Rahman worked with five ODA partners in Bangladesh, India and China and generated data through AMR awareness and ethnopharmacological surveys which were shared among the ODA partners through an AMR workshop at Dhaka University (March 2019) facilitating social engagement with health professionals and traditional practitioners.

Funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Dr Rahman's recent postdoctoral fellows are working on the therapeutic evaluation of some North-East Indian medicinal plants for the identification of compounds responsible for antibacterial properties against methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus.

Dr Rahman's current PhD students are working on medicinal plants - one project on Ghanaian medicinal plants for the identification of antimicrobial compounds against clinical isolates of multidrug resistance (MDR) and methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and another project on medicinal plants to characterize anticancer compounds against skin and breast cancer cell lines.

Research and impact

Dr Rahman has been working on numerous medicinal plants from different parts of the world for the isolation and characterization of bio-active metabolites belonging to a variety of chemical classes with potential activities against a series of clinical isolates of multi-drug resistance (MDR) and methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Some of the compounds isolated and identified by Dr Rahman and his collaborators revealed their potentials as efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs). In order to confirm the structures of the compounds of natural products, Dr Rahman exploits high field NMR (both 1D and 2D) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. He is also involved in the total synthesis of highly active natural products and their analogues to fit them for SAR study.

Dr Rahman’s research interest also includes ethnopharmacological survey to exploit the indigenous knowledge of traditional practitioners and/or traditional healers in drug discovery by identifying the medicinal plants that are being recommended for the treatment of infectious diseases. His group conducted such an ethnopharmacological survey in Bangladesh. Another similar survey will be carried out in Ghana to identify the medicinal plants that are being recommended by local healers for the treatment of various infections. Dr Rahman is also interested in propolis for anti-infective drug discovery.

Dr Rahman has published over 90 research outputs (citations 3,066; h-index 32; source- Google Scholar) in peer reviewed journals including Q1 and Q2 journals. He presented his research findings at several international research conferences in UK, USA, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Bangladesh and India as invited/ plenary speaker. His research has been included in the AD Scientific Index 2022 and ranked 9th in University of East London. He is currently serving as associate editor of Journal of Herbal Medicine, Frontiers in Pharmacology and topic editor for an issue in Frontiers in Pharmacology. Dr Rahman successfully supervised two PhD projects (one as DoS and another PhD as host supervisor during PhD placement) and two MRes projects to completion on time. He also supervised two postdoctoral fellows and hosted five professional fellows at UEL.

Dr Rahman currently has two PhD students as DoS, one PhD and two MRes students as 2nd supervisor. He is also supervising one postdoctoral fellow and is expecting two more postdoctoral fellows to start shortly.
