Mr John Macklin

Senior Lecturer

    I am the Programme Leader for the Masters in Educational Leadership.  This programme uses innovative App technology I developed with a tech company to allow students to learn and engage with materials on mobile devices.

    I am also the lead for masters research in the MA Education and MA Educational Leadership programme where I prepare students for research and supervise them to completion.

    I previously worked in a consortium with colleagues from the Institute of Education (now UCL) and King's College London to deliver a pan London Masters programme for newly qualified teachers and leaders.

    I was previously I was the programme leader for an Initial Teacher Education in Information and Communication Technology now Computing.  I still work on this programme with a colleague.

    I was Deputy Leader of the Waltham Forest Council. I was also the portfolio holder for Performance Management, Best Value, Finance, Procurement, Human Resources and IT. I was prior to this Chair of the Education Scrutiny Committee. This gave me the opportunity to develop public speaking skills and leadership of a large organisation with an annual budget of 600 million. I also lead council meetings and worked on pan London committees. I worked with local businesses, charities, sports groups and residents to develop and campaign for service change. I worked on a political parties e-campaign materials. I was an accredited IdEA (now the Local Government Improvement and Development Agency) peer mentor and graduate of the IdEA Leadership Academy

    Prior to this I have held many roles from being a partner in an interior decoration business (repro sculpture) to being a youth worker for a children's charity and most recently a teacher. I have taught in East London for fourteen years in the London Borough of Newham and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. I finished my career in teaching as a Head of Faculty for Technology and ICT managing a team of 14 staff where I achieved outstanding A level results.

    I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Member of the Institute of Leaders and Managers.

    Overview




    Presently, working on a BELMAS (British Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Society) project into Industrial Relations in English schools. This is being conducted within two locations in England with colleagues from Warwick and Lincoln Universities.

    The work I am undertaking on my Education Doctorate is borne from the need to address social inequality. I have completed work on Critical Race Theory and methodology as well as Complexity Theory and Leadership

    My Doctoral work will look at how policy is interpreted by teachers into practice that develops tacit knowledge (Phronesis)

    Complexity Theory and educational change/leadership in particular how leaders facilitate emergence and allow staff to initiate and lead change.

    I am also looking at how schools and local authorities understand and tackle inequality.

    I am particularly interested in strategic planning for education services.

    I am particularly interested in how decisions are made regarding resource allocation to meet priorities and provide best value.

    I am interested in developing mixed methods research in education.
