Dr Yannis (Ioannis) Fronimos

Yannis is Head of the Department of Professional Psychology at the University of East London.



    Yannis completed his undergraduate studies in Psychology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. He worked initially in Special Education and then moved to the UK to complete his Doctoral training in Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology at the University of Surrey. Yannis worked in various settings in the NHS with adults, children and groups, offering short-term focused and long-term therapy for severe and enduring mental health difficulties.

    Yannis joined the School of Psychology as a Senior Lecture in 2011 and initially led the provision of research training at the BSc (Hons) Counselling programme. He then became the director of clinical practice and eventually the Programme Leader of the same Programme. He was actively involved in the revalidation of the BSc (Hons) Counseling, designing programme and module curricula and was a key member of the team who worked towards successfully securing Programme accreditation by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). A recognition unique at the time for undergraduate Counselling training Programmes in London. Yannis organised and updated the integrative psychotherapeutic models adopted by the programme and shaped its contemporary identity as integrative training. He established connections with various external services and expanded the Programme's netwrok of placements. He organised various civic engagement events (placement events) and established procedures that improved the collaboration with counselling services.

    In January 2016 Yannis became the Head of the the Professional Practice in Psychology subject area and contributed to the School's strategic plans and operational procedures as part of the School's Senior Management Team. Since September 2017 Yannis is the Head of Department for Professinal Psychology in the College of Applied Health and Communities.
