My main current research interest is understanding the molecular mechanism that support behavioural changes following use or misuse of psychoactive substances. We use the fruit fly Drosophila to address questions about the changes in gene expression that occur following exposure to alcohol and how some of these changes and behavioural changes can be regulated through pharmacological intervention. My interests in cellular and molecular mechanism is reflected in my teaching in modules of Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology. I also have a broader interest in how teaching practices need to evolve making use of current technologies and methodologies to create effective learning environments. I strongly believe that Universities are 'learning' institutions and not 'teaching' institution where learning is a joint action between students and academics.
