Cass School of Education and Communities

I teach at undergraduate level and have research interests into the effects upon additional literacy programmes for children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties focusing particularly on self-esteem. I am also interested in the progression of mature students studying on Foundation Degrees in Childcare and Education.

I began my special education career as a Learning Support Assistant in mainstream and special schools. My passion for working with children with challenging behaviour led to studying at UEL on the New Beginnings Programme. This enabled me to study on the BA Honours Special Educational Needs Programme and after achieving a First Class Honours degree I began teaching on the UEL Foundation Degree in Childcare and Education. After successfully completing the PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I began teaching on the undergraduate BA Honours Special Education Programme. I was the first in my family to go to university and did so as a mature student. I can therefore relate very well to the challenges that studying at Higher Education level can bring and enjoy supporting our mature students throughout this journey.
