Professor Hassan Abdalla

Dean of the College of Arts, Technology & Innovation

    Professor Hassan Abdalla is an international authority in the field of Sustainability, Engineering Design, Factories of the Future, Artificial Intelligence in Design, and Future/Smart Cities. He has over 20 years of experience in both academia and industry.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce, Fellow of the IMechE and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  He has been appointed by HEFCE as a TEF academic assessor.
    Hassan was appointed the head of the Leicester School of Architecture & Spatial Design, from 2003 to 2009, where he transformed the School, led the team to regain ARB Prescription and RIBA accreditations, boosted its profile and turned it into one of the best Schools in the UK.  He was also the Principal Investigator of several national and international projects and the Dean of the College of Design at UoS from 2009 to 2011?.  Hassan established the College as the design hub of the region and led the curriculum design and development and successful accreditation of all its programmes. He made a substantial contribution to stimulating research culture across the institution. 

    Hassan was sponsored by the British Council to establish research collaborations with some of theresearch-intensive Universities in Japan, Europe, and the USA. He was awarded a Medal of Appreciation by the IMS Centre in Tokyo, which is run under the auspices of the Japanese Government, in recognition of his innovation and substantial contribution to the international collaboration with Kajima Corporation, Hazama Corporation, University of Tokyo, and Waseda University.  He has been leading major research projects nationally and internationally in partnership with world-class Universities and organisations. His research group has a track record of securing funds from EPSRC, DTI, and the Commission of the European Union.  He also led several technology transfer projects in the East Midlands in collaboration with the regional development agency and SMEs.

Professor Abdalla was the principal investigator of Euro1.71million - FP7 project in partnership with twelve European Organisations including DCA, University of Leeds and TUDelft. He is currently working with Ford Motors on developing a Symbiotic simulation for the production of Ford Engines - industrial Case Award by EPSRC.  
    He is the author and co-author of over 100 papers published in international journals and conferences world-wide. He has served on the TSB/DTI Advisory Board and is a member of the EPSRC peer review College/Assessment Panel.  He is also a member of several international research boards and committees. 



    Overview




    Hassan’s research focuses on a selection of areas, which are world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour and are aligned directly with professional and creative education. His research aims to improve business performance, add value and reduce environmental impact, as well as help UK industries to thrive in the global economy.

    Over the last 12 months Hassan has been successful in leading over £1.9 million multinational research and knowledge-transfer projects funded by the European Commission – FP7, TSB-KTP and EPSRC Case Award with Ford Motors Company.

    He is currently the lead investigator of a European FP7 project entitled “Pan-European Data Centre Academy” jointly with twelve companies and universities from across Europe.

A major output of an EPSRC study project was a set of concepts, approach and a distributed information system that facilitate virtual multi-disciplinary product development activities. The system was demonstrated in a pilot on an automobile engine within the automotive sector. The paper presents a new approach to design for automation in order to shorten assembly costs and cycle times by analysing the product design using reasoning techniques and production rules against targeted criteria, then provide designers with design alternatives / suggestions to further improve the design for automation.     Hassan’s research and commercial activities include research projects funded by Research Councils EPSRC, DTI/TSB, and European Commission – FP7, Regional Development Agency (EMDA), and Leicestershire commercial partnership. Some examples are:

    July 2013 – Jan 2015 FP7 (€1.71 Million) PEDCA project (H Abdalla – PI and project coordinator) entitled Pan-Europe Data Centre Academy,
    jointly with companies from across Europe including Technische Universiteit Delft, Johann Wolfgang-Goethe Universität Frankfurt, Greater London Authority, Wirtschaftsfoerderung Frankfurt GmbH, TeleCity Group UK Limited, Twente Institute for Wireless and Mobile Communications B.V, University of Leeds, and AIMES Grid Services CIC.
    Sept 2013 – August 2015 TSB – KTP (£110,000) with Cel-F- Solar - Ecolution (H Abdalla – Supervisor), the project aims to develop an energy-management programme with an e-portal interface for social housing providers and tenants, enabling positive behavioural change whilst improving Ecolution’s turnover, profit-margins and reputation.
    October 2013 – September 2016 EPSRC Case Award with Ford Motor Company (£70,000+), Principal investigator - H Abdalla. The project is titled “Symbiotic Modelling of the engine production system at Ford”.
    EPSRC/DTI Research Council funded project (£534,400) Principal investigator – Professor Abdalla, the project aim was to investigate sustainable cutting fluid technology for advancing machining in Aerospace and automotive industry. The project was in partnership with world class organisations such as PERA international, Cargill, Castilion Aerospace, Bayer LTD, and IMS Ltd.

    Hassan has supervised several PhD degrees to successful completion. He has acted as external examiner for UG, PG and Doctorate degrees at several universities in the UK and overseas including Brunel University, University of Birmingham, Nottingham Trent, Bradford, Dublin City University and Westminster.
