Men's Basketball 3rds Lose out to Royall Holloway

University of East London’s 3rd Team hosted Royal Holloway’s 1st Team in the BUCS Basketball South Eastern Conference Cup 2016-17, and were unlucky to be on the end of a defeat as heavy as 92-49. After UEL took an early lead in the first quarter, they were mostly on the back foot of a closely-contested opening 10 minutes. They trailed 25-19, and Holloway were making them work. Holloway increased their lead early in the second quarter, making it 36-21 early on. Despite continued battling by UEL, Holloway continued to pull away from the home side, and their dominance was reflected by the scoreboard at the end of the quarter at 55-28.

The third quarter resulted in Holloway attacking more than they’d done all match, which inevitably led to them scoring more points and gaining an even larger lead over UEL. The quarter ended 79-34 to Holloway, and they looked to be in full control of the match. Despite Holloway’s astounding lead, UEL didn’t let their spirits drop. They continued to fight in the final quarter and didn’t allow Holloway have it easy. However, this wasn’t enough to keep them in the cup and the game ended 92-49 to an impressive Royal Holloway.

UEL will be disappointed to be out of the cup, but they can be proud of their performance against a side as strong as Royal Holloway’s 1st Team, who managed to put themselves out of UEL’s reach in the middle two quarters. The hosts can now turn their attention to their match against Hertfordshire next Wednesday, in order to continue their impressive league form.
