Netball 3rd pick up crucial win

UEL handed a gallant Creative Arts Surrey team their first league defeat of the season in the BUCS South Eastern 11A Division, at SportsDock on Wednesday, 9 December.

UEL’s Goal Shooter, Nat Kent was in clinical form as the home team pulled off a 14-6 win, following last week’s loss to Queen Mary’s.

Surrey got off to a sharp start when a lapse in defensive communication within the first minute resulted in the home team conceding. However, UEL settled down and managed to string some good passes together in the middle of the court which eventually led to a 2-1 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

UEL stretched their lead in the 2nd quarter from some great finishing by Nat Kent and Nat Jones to top of some well worked attacks from the back, making it 5-2 to UEL.

The Surrey girls battled hard in the 3rd quarter, where at this point there were some tired legs from both teams, a result of the high work rate on display. They managed to get a couple of points in return by throwing caution to the wind, but as a result of their attacking style, they were caught on the counter, where UEL stretched their lead to 9-4.

Goal Keeper, Ellie Clarke, was on great defensive form in the last stanza, blocking and intercepting opportunity after opportunity where UEL stretched their lead to 14-6 with substitute, Sarah Wilson adding to the talley.

The whistle blew and a well-earned 14-6 win for the home team.

UEL’s Sarah Wilson, who was sidelined due to a rotation policy, spoke on the team’s improvement over the last few weeks.

“I think they’ve played really well. They are thinking a bit more now and logically under pressure. The defence is much better too.”

UEL will now have a break over Christmas and return with their next league game against St Mary’s University on February 10at Sports Dock.
