Women's Hockey first match of the BUCS season

UEL Women’s 1s 6 – 1 UCL 4s (RUMS)

After competing in the University Cup on Sunday October 11th, UEL went into the game with confidence despite the many new faces joining the team this year.

The match got off to a slow start with UCL scoring the first goal to go 1-0 up causing frustration on the pitch with UEL having most of the possession. With many unsuccessful short corners, UEL were in need of an equaliser to bring back some hope of winning the first BUCS match of the season. The frustrating first half lead to UEL captain Charlotte Mackintosh being sent off with a two-minute green card.

However, after a strong half time talk, UEL started the second half with a forceful determination to win and showed their dedication with centre-mid Ciara Gormley scoring the equaliser. This was all UEL needed to start a cascade of goals from some strong team efforts, including a disallowed penalty stroke from Aoife Smyth.

The team worked extremely well together keeping possession and finally seeing the results. UCL showed a strong defence, however, they were unable to hold out the UEL attacks with Aoife Smyth, Charlotte Mackintosh and Meg Dawson all adding to the score line. UEL showed excellent teamwork with a strong press against UCL rarely allowing the ball through.

The match finished with a 6-1 win for UEL, with defender Michelle Mullen receiving Man of the Match for an impressive performance. This first win of the season puts UEL walking into the next match with confidence and hoping to continue their winning streak.
