What we do

We stand for academic excellence, creative thinking and inspirational teaching. Student success and satisfaction is key to our school ethos; our academic staff are committed to delivering teaching that is relevant and challenging, and in many cases influenced by the cutting-edge research that is conducted within the school.

Research

Research activity is a central feature of The School of Social Sciences as there is a close link between the reputation of the School and its commitment to excellence in research and teaching. Our staff and students engage in research of local, national and international significance.

The school currently houses several research centres and groups, all of which organise series of research seminars, lectures, workshops and symposia given by researchers within UEL and externally.

Student experience

Brilliant teaching

Teaching is key to students’ experience of higher education. At UEL we have an experienced and engaged team of academic staff who deliver the teaching which is geared to stimulate student’s curiosity and motivate their independent studies. As well as conventional forms of teaching in lectures and seminars we also use field-trips and new technology to enrich the learning experience of students. Student satisfaction with their teaching on our courses is consistently high, as reflected in the annual National Student Survey (NSS).

Research-led teaching

We believe that knowledge transforms lives, and we’re committed to making a difference to society by fostering confident, life-ready individuals and through cutting-edge research that benefits communities.

Our academic team are actively engaged in conducting research which informs their teaching. As a result our students have the opportunity to really get close to the process of academic knowledge creation rather than just read about it. Indeed students, even at undergraduate level, get opportunities to participate in real research projects which can transform their experience of higher education and give them invaluable experience.
Our students can be certain that what they learn represents the very latest thinking in their subject.

Student support

At UEL we pride ourselves on the level of support provided for our students. Apart from every student being allocated a personal tutor, there are host of additional dedicated support services; such as the Learning Achievement Advisors (LAAs); the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) tutor; and our Skillzone where students can get specialist help with anything from bibliographic software that compile your reference lists for you to brushing up on basic maths skills. We also hold regular revision sessions accross all our modules and an annual StudyFest to help students prepare to submit their assignments.

As a School we work closely with the University's Careers and Employability (CASE) team to ensure students have access to the latest volunteering, placement and internship opportunities. Weekly drop-in sessions are also held with expert career advisors who will help them showcase any professional experience and academic practice in their CVs, application forms and covering letters. We also provide a range of in-sessional employability and professional skills workshops tailored to social sciences students and designed to develop particular skill set.

Community engagement

100% without the support from the academic staff I do not think I would have come this far. The relationship I've had with them has been amazing and I have always received supportive and encouraging comments. As a mature student this support has really boosted my confidence and made me feel that I can achieve my goals.
