good career moveEnjoy a programme of expert guest lectures, field trips and laboratory and field practicals, plus support to find valuable work experience or a placement year in industry.
Civil engineering at UEL is a practical and creative discipline with a great track record of student employment. When you’re considering where to study, bear a few things in mind.
Our courses are overseen by an Industrial Advisory Board that includes prestigious organisations such as Atkins, Waterman, Thames Water, SRK Consulting, WSP and the London Boroughs of Newham and Waltham Forest. You can be sure we deliver what employers need.
You will be based at our Docklands campus at the heart of a massive regeneration area. This base will be a springboard for you to see civil engineering on site, in action - not just in the classroom.
You will have the chance to study all of the major disciplines of the profession, including structural, materials, geotechnical and water engineering.
You will also have a personal tutor to support you and a course leader for each part of the course, plus we’ll help you to find work experience to boost your practical skills and your CV.

What we're researching
Our staff bring a huge amount of research expertise to bear on their teaching, so you can be sure that what you study reflects the most up-to-date thinking and practice. Alongside strong academic credentials, many have extensive industrial experience as practising civil engineers.
Our expertise includes coastal and river engineering, structural analysis and design, geotechnical analysis and design, laboratory modelling and computational structural mechanics.
For example, Senior Lecturer Dr Ali Abbas, who has excelled in finite element analysis of concrete structures, researches how concrete behaves under different loading conditions, including earthquakes.
Our Director of Quality and Academic Standards, Dr Martin Marriott, has particular interests in water and environmental management, and hydraulics.
Senior Lecturer Dr Ravindra Jayaratne has worked with academics in the UK, Japan, Canada and Mexico on mechanisms to counter the deadly effects of tsunamis and storm surges, while Senior Lecturer Dr Anca Ciupala is researching how to strengthen earthquake-hit buildings with fibre-reinforced polymer materials.
We’re also developing innovative technologies to promote carbon-neutrality and eco-efficiency through our Sustainability Research Institute, which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
