Prevention of blindness due to diabetes in India
Prevention of blindness due to diabetes in India
Project aims
India has 77 million diabetics and in the next decade, it can increase to 100 million. 5% of them can develop severe vision loss. Early detection of retinopathy can prevent its progress.
The program screened more than 50,000 people in 14 states.
Since 2014, the Institute has been involved in strengthening the primary health care services in Kerala and as a part of the Ornate India programme we piloted a diabetic retinopathy care pathway in that state.
The government of Kerala adopted our DR care pathway as a policy for the whole of Kerala in 2019. A few other states followed suit.
