How you'll learn
A core element of the HR professional role is in developing leadership and managerial skills in others – and on this course you will have the chance to hone your own managerial skills, style and qualities. You will undertake leadership development exercises, including Myers-Briggs Type Indicator tests.
As well as the many practical and scenario-based exercises, you will also be taught via lectures and seminars and you’ll be expected to conduct a great deal of independent study and research.
You will be taught by active researchers, who bring their insights to bear on the course. Research interests of our staff include diversity, gender and access to senior management positions, employment law and changes in public and private sector management.
The course leader, Elaine Yerby, is vice-chair of the 2,500-strong East London branch of the CIPD. All branch meetings are held at the University of East London, and you will benefit from this regular networking opportunity with senior HR professionals, who also provide guest speakers.
What you'll learn
The areas you will cover include managing people, recruitment, employment law, leadership and employee relations. You will also study management, strategy and training and development.
The course has been carefully designed to mirror the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s learning outcomes, so you can be sure that you will be taught the latest thinking.
You will also produce a dissertation on a relevant topic of your choice, ensuring this has a strong strategic as well as a theoretical rationale.
As a pre-requisite, the topic you choose must be grounded within a company or organisation. Recent dissertation topics have included the female talent pipeline in the mobile phone industry and assessing the readiness for change in a large marketing company.
Your future career
Which route will you choose? This HRM Master's qualification will open doors to the profession in the public, private or voluntary sector. All companies and organisations thrive or fail according to the quality of their people and with your MA you will be well placed to make a strategic contribution.
You will have a breadth and depth of knowledge that will make you an attractive proposition to employers, able to combine a theoretical and practical approach to make a positive difference.
You might choose to go down the generalist path, where your skills and talents will be put to use across the range of HRM disciplines. Or instead you might choose to focus on a specific area.
You could, for example focus on reward – ensuring the organisations retain the best staff – or on recruitment, making sure that companies attract and bring on board the best people for the job. This could be in-house or for a recruitment consultancy.
You could also focus on training and development, making sure that staff have the right skills and qualities to make a telling contribution to any company.
Good HRM staff are in demand and you might decide to go freelance or set up your own company. This qualification will increase your options significantly.
