The short Practice Educator - Stage 1 course is for qualified social workers who want to supervise students qualifying for their BA (Hons) Social Work or MA Social Work courses during their placements.
This course is linked to your professional requirement as a social worker to provide evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as part of your continued registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. It is also mapped to the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) of the College of Social Work.
We run this course in partnership with local authorities. It is a regulatory body requirement that our practice educators are qualified to an appropriate level.

Continued Professional Development
This course meets the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements as set by the Health and Care Professions Council.
You must have been working in post-qualifying social work practice for at least 18 months.

What you'll learn
The Practice Educator Stage 1 course is an accredited MA-level short course with 30 credits. You can study it flexibly as stand-alone short course with credit, or use it as a building block for a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Master of Arts course.
You can also apply for accredited prior learning through UEL’s ACL system to progress towards achieving postgraduate awards.
For the Practice Educator Stage 1 and Stage 2 courses, you will be expected to supervise a student on placement.
The course comprises six days of teaching, led by practice educator Kimberly Detjen. Sessions will feature group discussions to promote a reflective approach to the task of education practice. You will also receive direct guidance on teaching and learning theory, assessing fairly, working with struggling or failing students, and devising teaching and learning tools.
