What we're researching

Staff that facilitate this course are all part of the Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences Research Group (ASSRG), a group that investigates topics within sport and exercise sciences.  Sport psychology research forms a major part of this group with both of the main teaching staff being included in the latest Research Excellence Framework submission.  The psychological benefits of exercise in natural environments, expectancy effects, stereotype threat and its impact on performance, and positive psychology within sport are all areas that are researched within the teaching team.

Group members are active practitioners within professional sport and elite sport, currently working with athletes at the highest levels of sport.

How you'll learn

We are investing in key areas beyond your studies including our career services, library, and well-being, to be available both face-to-face on campus and online with many of these available 24/7. We have new, modern library facilities on both campuses offering inspirational environments for study and research. Libraries contain resources in print and digital formats, a range of study spaces, and a dedicated librarian who can assist with your learning. Students are supported with any academic or subject-related queries by an academic advisor, or module leaders.

Guided independent study

When not attending timetabled lectures or workshops, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will typically involve skills development through online study, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects and preparing coursework assignments and presentations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, and specialist facilities, such as game labs, the library, the full Microsoft Office software, including MS Teams, and Moodle: our Virtual Learning Environment.

Academic support

If you need a bit of extra help with certain skills such as academic writing, English, maths, or statistics, our academic tutors offer workshops, drop-in sessions, and one-to-one appointments to help our students achieve their potential. You can receive advice and guidance on all aspects of the IT systems provided by the university from our IT Service Desks located on all three campuses.

Our Student Support hubs in Docklands and Stratford feature centralised helpdesks to cater to your every need. UEL provides also support and advice for disabled students and those with specific learning difficulties (SPDs).

Dedicated personal tutor

When you arrive, we'll introduce you to your personal tutor. This is the member of staff who will provide academic guidance, be a support throughout your time at UEL and who will show you how to make the best use of all the help and resources that we offer.

Your timetable

Your individualised timetable is normally available to students within 48 hours of enrolment. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9.00am and 6.00pm. For undergraduate students, Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities, but there may be occasions when this is not possible. Timetables for part-time students will depend on the modules selected.

How you'll be assessed

This programme will consist of six modules (180 credits) over the course of 12 months/three terms.

All modules are individual (30 credits) except the independent research project which is a double module (60 credits).

Students work on a theory-to-practice teaching strategy.  Initially, students are taken through a theoretical underpinning knowledge of strength and conditioning, and research methods, followed by practical application of the theory, before beginning the process of application by a research project and applied work-based placement.

Assessment tasks are mainly spread across the year to make the workload manageable.  There is a diverse range of assessment methods that include essays, presentations, case studies, professional development, reflective work, and practical activities. All grades count towards your module mark. More details will be included in the student handbook and module guides.
